Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

JIREH VAN KRYZLER MARAVILLA
Name:_______________________ Course, Year and Section:_BSA 3C________

Instructions: a) Show your complete solutions. b) Draw the necessary Free-Body Diagram (FBD).
c) Handwritten solutions.

01. A rod is composed of an aluminum section rigidly attached between steel and bronze sections, as
shown in figure. Axial loads are applied at the positions indicated. If P = 3000 lb and the cross-sectional
area is 0.5 in.2, determine the stress in each section. (15 pts.)

02. Determine the largest weight W which can be supported by two wires shown in figure below.
The stresses in wires AB and AC are not to exceed 100 MPa and 150 MPa, respectively. The
cross-sectional areas of the two wires are 400 mm2 for wire AB and 200 mm2 for wire AC.

03. In figure, assume that a 20-mm -diameter rivet joins the plates that are each 110 mm
wide. The allowable stresses are 120 MPa for bearing in the plate material and 60 MPa for
the shearing of the rivet. Determine (a) the minimum thickness of each plate; and (b) the
largest average tensile stress in the plates. (15 pts.)
04. The cross-sectional areas of each member of the truss are 1200 mm2. Calculate the stresses
in members DF, CE, and BD. (20 pts.)
05. The tank shown in the figure is fabricated from ⅟8 in. steel plate. Calculate the maximum
longitudinal and circumferential stress caused by an internal pressure of 125 psi.
