History of spread

The term spreadsheet is a compound

word from the terms “spread” and

“sheet”.

 “spread” literary signify the two facing pages of a newspaper, magazine

or book, starting from the left extending to the right across the center fold

and taking the two pages as one.

 “sheet” is from one piece or sheet of paper.

 In 1979, Software Arts, a software company introduced Visicalc, considered

to be the first computer spreadsheet program. This program was initially

available only in the Apple II computer, a computer made by Apple Corp.,

the computer company founded by Steve Jobs.

 In 1982, Lotus Development Corporation introduced Lotus 1-2-3, a

spreadsheet program running in MS-DOS (Disk Operating System) designed

for the IBM-PC.

 In 1985, Microsoft introduced Excel, compatible to the Mac Operating

System only.

 In 1987, Microsoft Windows version was released.

Is a spreadsheet application, business

graphics, and data management

software that can be used for storing,

organizing and manipulating data.

 The program displays cells organized

into rows and columns where data or

formulas can be typed in a relative or

absolute reference to their cells.

COMMON USES OF EXCEL

 Accounting – can be used in many financial accounting statements such as

cash flow statement, income statement, or profit and loss statement.

 Budgeting – whether your needs are personal or business related, you can

create any type of budget in Excel like marketing budget plan, an event

budget, or a retirement budget.

 Billing and Sales – useful for managing billing and sales data such as sales

invoice, packing slips or purchase orders.

 Reporting – reflecting your data analysis or summarizing your data.

Examples are reports that measure project performance, variance between

projected and actual results.

 Planning – a great tool for creating professional plans or useful planners like

weekly class plan, marketing research plan, a year-end tax plan or planners

that help you organize weekly meals, parties or vacations.

 Tracking – keep track of data in a time sheet or list. Examples are inventory

list that keeps track of equipment.

 Calendars – because of its grid-like workplace, Excel lends itself well to

creating any type of calendar such as academic calendar to keep track or

activities during the school year, fiscal year to track business events and

milestones.
