Chapter-1 Introduction

Introduction on Four Days Workweek Concept

As the worldwide pandemic strengthened from end-2019, obviously the work from home
system was fundamental for the working environment to proceed with their capacity. This
unexpected change in working society has provoked various associations all over the planet to
investigate ways of expanding laborer's balance between fun and serious activities and
efficiency without enduring compensation cuts. In this way, decreased working hours where
representatives work four-day/eight hours out of each week all things being equal of a five-day
work week, has been an argument in different created nations around the world. Despite the
fact that it's anything but a novel thought, as of now there have been news and discuss moving
to a four-day working week system with no remuneration cuts. This thought was generally
advocated because of the stimulus made by the COVID-19 pandemic which drove monetarily
troubled organizations to look for imaginative ways of reducing expenses. That as well as
further developed representative prosperity and prepared for a superior balance between serious
and fun activities. This was on the grounds that workers confronted less pressure and were
more vigorous to finish things rapidly in order to partake in that an additional one occasion
each week. This, joined with the way that they'll get similar measure of compensation
regardless of working for a lesser number of days, assisted them with keeping a sound
perspective and caused less burnout to their wellbeing which brought about better prosperity
for the representative.

5
Challenges of 4 days’ work week
Longer hours and business related pressure
In, most representatives on a multi-day week will undoubtedly be supposed to work similar 40-
hour weeks, yet in four days rather than five. For this situation, movements may be stretched
out to 10 hours. Longer days could essentially affect your workers' feelings of anxiety and in
this manner their general prosperity and usefulness.
With numerous benefits, the work framework likewise has a few defects. A few enterprises
could experience in this work-shift. For example, a transport driver can't work extra to have
the option to take next Friday off, similarly as an inn gourmet specialist can't abbreviate five
days of tidying up rooms into four.
Businesses that apply a four-day long week of work will generally make up the lost day by a
total number of hours a worker should labor for a day. This powers them to arrive at office a
couple of hours sooner or remain for a couple of hours longer, which horrendously impacts
their everyday schedules.
In this work-shift, project cutoff time likewise assumes a crucial part. One should change your
cutoff times. Assuming one neglects to do that, the person will risk missing venture cutoff
times.
A 10-hour or 12-hour shift is a long one (think basically) and few out of every odd individual
has the endurance for it. Furthermore, working extended periods of time (over 9 hours every
day) adversely affects the strength of representatives.

6
Advantages of a four-day working week
Reduced cost
A four-day week can reduce expenses for everybody. That’s what the undeniable one is, given
the workplace would be shut for an additional one day seven days, running expenses would see
a critical drop.

Happier employees
Having a three-day weekend leaves employees with more free time. Not many people will
complain about that. Having additional opportunity to do the things you love increments
generally joy and can assist with expanding devotion to an organization - it's a shared benefit.

Fewer health issues

Having a more drawn-out end of the week will permit individuals to invest more energy with
their loved ones and do things that they love, which will normally prompt an improvement in
prosperity.
It'll likewise give them an additional a lie-in every week which will help them re-charge
somewhat more following a bustling week.
Increase in productivity levels
The overall theory behind more limited week is that more joyful, more satisfied representatives
are along these lines more centered around their work when in the working environment. And
this will lead to better productivity

Recruitment and retention

In the age of the millennial, having the option to offer a more adaptable work design is certainly
an advantage that convinces representatives to remain at an organization. Realizing they'll get
a long weekend is one that keeps representatives propelled week-on-week. It's as yet a generally
interesting contribution and can be an incredible method for helping the best ability through
the entryway and keep them engaged as well.

8
Literature Review

This literature review discusses why the four-day/eight hours work week benefits both
companies and their employees as research has shown that longer working hours harm the
employees and does not amount to a more effective organization. Based on the concept of a
four-day workweek, the aim is to reduce the standard five-day, 40-hour week to 32 hours per
week in four days. However, the concept faces heavy objections based on the current norms of
employment. Therefore, the reduction in the number of working hours might seem like an
absurd suggestion (Grosse, 2018). However, with reference to Figure 1, the number of hours
needed to produce as much work has reduced over the past 50 years, indicating that it only
takes approximately 10 hours now to achieve the same amount of work done in 40 hours in the
1950s. The production rate is equal to that of a 40-hour worker indicates that the four-day
workweek would be an increasing trend rather than a radical departure from historical norms
(The Economist, 2021). This writing audit means to give setting to the examination with respect
to the four-day eight hours weeks’ worth of work through the investigation of different
examinations directed with regards to the adequacy of developing a four-day weeks’ worth of
work among representatives. The review into this program will check out benefits through the
investigation of efficiency and representative fulfillment rate and desire to spread attention to
its viability to reasonable organizations, in this manner further developing the general
efficiency rate furthermore fulfillment pace of the association.

9

 To identify the benefits and drawback of 4 days’ workweek.
 The purpose of doing this study is to identify whether this policy will work or not for
both employees and business.
 To identify that the 4 days’ workweek will work in India or not.

numerous forms, including questionnaires and telephone interviews amongst others.
Secondary research involves the summary, collection and/or synthesis of existing research
rather than primary research, where data are collected from, for example, research subjects
or experiments.
Thus the sources of data collection were as follows:

PRIMARY SECONDARY

Interview Schedule Company records

Questionnaires Magazines

Observation Method Other records

Discussion Website of Company

11
Data type: Primary as well as secondary data was
collected. Sample Size: 50

12
Limitation of study

Time Consumption: Due to the overall nature of the work, the time required for

accurate research is much longer compared to the second data, which can be collected
in a very short time.

Incorrect Responses: If the research involves taking feedback from the target
audience, there is a good chance that the feedback provided is incorrect. Answers by
their very nature are usually biased or given as a result.

Additional resources are needed: Apart from cost and time, other resources such as
human resources and building materials are also needed in large quantities to conduct
High Cost: Collecting data using basic research is an expensive proposal as the vendor has to
participate in everything and have to design everything.

13
Chapter-2 Conceptual Framework
Experimentation of 4 days’ workweek
(Internationally)

Most companies reduce the workweek to 32 hours over four days, rather than maintaining 40
hours within four days. The nonprofit calls this a 100-80-100 model: Workers receive 100% of
their pay for 80% of the time and maintain 100% productivity. As the push for a four-day work
week was at that point acquiring support across the world, the extreme changes to office life
have caused the plan to appear to be more reasonable to organizations all over the planet.
Presently Belgium will offer representatives the chance to work a four-day week. As of late,
numerous different nations have likewise embraced a four-day work week plan and proceeded
to keep a recognizable expansion in efficiency. From UAE to New Zealand, here is the
rundown of nations across the globe that have moved to a 4-day work week. Take a look:

Spain
Last year, the Spanish government has declared that it will explore different avenues
regarding a preliminary four-day work week, as per the Guardian. The Spanish government
consented to a 32-hour long week of work north of three years, without cutting laborers' pay.
Iceland
From 2015 to 2019, Iceland ran the world's biggest preliminary of a more limited working
week. An examination of the outcomes showed quantifiable achievement! Everybody was
more joyful, better, and more useful. An investigation of 2,500 laborers in Iceland, over 1%
of the labor force, was directed to check whether abbreviated work days lead to additional
efficiency and a more joyful labor force. The preliminaries were made across a variety of
various kinds of work environments, including preschools, workplaces, social specialist
organizations, and medical clinics.

Scotland

After the progress of Iceland's four-day work week, Scotland likewise join the club of 4-day
work week nations to evaluate a better approach for adjusting work and individual life. As per
reports, the nation is conceptualizing thoughts on the most proficient method to execute this as
a few group have said they would like to have a four-day week and an extended weekend. In
light of the examination of the research organization Institute for Public Policy Research
(IPPR), Scotland found that 80% of individuals imagine that slicing their number of days at
work - without any deficiency of pay - would have a 'beneficial outcome on their prosperity.

Ireland
Ireland has additionally sent off its experimental run program that will test the viability of a
four-day working week, with no misfortune in pay for representatives. This program started in
January 2022. Under the new program, associations will get backing, preparing, and coaching
on the most proficient method to make the four-day week work. The Irish government will
likewise support exploration to survey the monetary, social, and ecological effects of the
program. Supposedly, 17 organizations situated the nation over pursued the program.

14
New Zealand
Two years ago, New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern recommended businesses
consider a four-day working week and other adaptable working choices. Staff at Barnes'
organization Perpetual Guardian have been working four days every week starting around
2018. They executed the four-day week, where staff are paid similar sum for working less days
following a six-week preliminary observed efficiency had worked on by 20%.

Japan

The country that has generally discussed work proficiency and quality, slights towards the four-
day work week by encouraging firms to take on the example. It was in June 2021 that Japan
government began a drive that requested that organizations start a four-day long week of work
with a plan to further develop the country's balance between serious and fun activities.
Panasonic is the furthest down the line Japanese organization to break with Japan's compulsive
worker culture and deal a 4-day long week of work.

UAE
The UAE cut its true working week to four-and-a-half days toward the beginning of December
2021 and changed from the five-day work week. According to the reports, the new change
happened on January 1, 2022. Referring g to this, the UAE Government Media Office informed
that the new change has been executed to further develop balance between serious and fun
activities and efficiency.

Belgium

Belgium has joined a large group of different nations that are offering representatives a four-
day long week of work as a feature of its progressions in labor regulations in a post-COVID
period. Reporting the change bundle, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said the
representative strengthening strategy would make individuals and organizations more
grounded following two troublesome years with the pandemic.

15
Proposal of 4 days’ workweek (India)
As the government concludes the guidelines for the new work codes, the Labor Ministry is
presently considering giving adaptability to organizations to have four working days rather
than five or six. The proposed new work codes could give organizations the adaptability of
four working days in seven days, even as the functioning hours breaking point of 48 hours for
seven days will stay. This suggests that there will be longer working hours assuming the it is
diminished to work days. For example, a four working day week should meet the 48-hour
week after week work hours, bringing about day to day moves of 12 hours, which will
correspondingly diminish assuming there is five-day or six-day working week. When and how
might this be carried out: The Ministry of Labor and Employment is probably going to finish
the interaction to settle the principles for four labor codes soon. The arrangement of
adaptability to have diminished working long periods of four days in the Labor code decides
will imply that organizations won't need earlier government gesture to institute it.
The idea of a 4-day work week might have got acceptance abroad but in India, things may be
different. A 4-day work week might have got acceptance abroad but in India, things may be
different. "4 day a week concept is here to stay once implemented but would take time initially
to have acceptance from organizations. Overall, we as of now have idea of half or entire three-
day weekend on Fridays, in fact input of Indian representatives working in such MNCs is
positive. such labor code, if implemented, would give organizations flexibility to follow
contingent approach and choose their own way of working. As said what could be better for
employees than to have flexibility in way of working basis their profile," said Nimisha
Singhal, Nokia Solutions, HR Operations Expert, Nokia Solutions and Networks.

Compacting Hours Can Raise Health Issues

Very much like some other arrangement, the four-day work week has its own entanglements.
Pooja Goel, Director, Reliason Technologies Pvt Ltd (Leading AI based Recruitment Firm)
said, "Managers and representatives need to consider the impact that compacting hours into a
four-day time frame, will raise actual medical problems. Other than the actual medical
problems, they likewise need to consider the impact on specialists' psychological wellness,
feelings of anxiety, weariness, and taking care of school going children. Many working
guardians will lose the capacity to connect with their kids at "ideal time" ."
Discussing something similar, Disha Shah, Human Resources, Haymarket SAC Publishing
(India) Private Limited shared, "4 days work week proposition may not work for all
organizations. It's simply a trend. As a HR, I would lean toward giving adaptability to
representatives as far as clear objectives, chances to develop, and an opportunity to buckle
down to accomplish results. 4 days, 5 days or 7 days seven days doesn't exactly make any
difference assuming the representative is miserable in his work environment."

Will Allow A Better Work-Life Balance

With the quantity of week after week offs going from 1-2 to 3, representatives will get
additional time off work. "Indeed, to keep a decent balance between serious and fun activities,
and to feel more present and invigorated while at the workplace. A four-day long week of
work will zero in on efficiency and result instead of time spent in a working environment, it
will permit a superior balance between fun and serious activities, further developed

16
representative fulfillment, maintenance, and emotional well-being. Organizations can
likewise set aside cash from utilizing less assets when representatives invest less energy in the
workplace. This saves the additional cost on the power and utility utilization when no
representatives will be in the working environment. An amazing advance towards individual
and profession development and gives everybody an additional multi day to take up another
leisure activity and invest energy with the family," said Rupa Barua, Managing Partner and
Director, The Brand Quest Saying in the event that the new proposition will be successful in
India right now would be very interesting. The arrangement has an equivalent measure of
benefits and downsides. Be that as it may, it will be intriguing to check whether the
organizations intend to explore different avenues regarding it and attempt to find some kind
of harmony.

19
Why 4 days work week will won’t work in India
India To Introduce 4-Day Work Week for FY 2022-23
India will soon announce four new labour codes on wages, occupation safety, social security,
health and working conditions that will come to action from the next financial year. These new
labour codes will impact businesses and workers. Under these new codes, there will be
significant changes in the work culture and employment. India may soon have a 4-day work
week from next year instead of the current 5 Days work week. While this is the good news, the
bad news is that employees will have to work for 12 hours on all those four days a labour
ministry has announced that the 48-hour weekly work requirements must be met.

This May Result In 12-Hour Working Days with Less Take-Home Salary
According to a Hindustan Times report, if these new labour codes are implemented, there will
be a reduction in the take-home salary of employees as companies will have to finance a higher
provident fund liability. While employees will have a higher contribution to the PF account
monthly, their in-hand salary will see a reduction. Around 13 states have already pre-published
draft rules as the four new labour codes will most likely be implemented in the financial year
of 2022-2023.

Chapter-4 Conclusion and Recommendation
Conclusion
The thought behind a four-day weeks’ worth of work is to accomplish similar outcomes in less
hours so individuals have more opportunity to seek after different interests, invest energy with
friends and family, and deal with their lives. Organizations could benefit through expanded
deals, diminished laborer burnout, and lower turnover, among different up-sides. Stressing
results rather than hours logged actually intends that there's compelling reason need to cut pay
or advantages. A major shift in how we think about and approach work is a precursor to
standardizing a four-day workweek.

28
Recommendation
The following are a few things that can be taken into care while implementing 4 days’
workweek:
 It should be implementing by understanding how will it impact the employer,
employee, and customers.
 Before implementing a survey must be conducted in the company so that you can
know the acceptance by the employee.
 Company should schedule the days which is going to be holiday.
 All the terms and condition should be informed clearly so that later on no one can
blame.
 Policy should be made on the favor of both employee and employer.
 Government should pass certain law so that it should not exploit employees.
 Salary cut should not be so high that it causes another problem of turnover,
absenteeism.
