It's not always that your resume gets you
the dream job. It also depends how well
you manage the interview part, especially
the 'tough and tricky' questions.

A. Company Research
• Gathering background information on employers is a crucial
element in successful interview preparation.
• Before the interview review the company‘s web site and don't
be afraid to contact your prospective employer to request
details on the position you are interviewing for or to ask for
company literature.
• Google the company to see what other information is available

online.

1.Previous Employment?
• Interviewers expect a candidate for employment to
be able to review their work history in detail.
• Name of company, position title and description,

dates of employment
• Refresh your memory prior to the interview by

reviewing your resume
2.What was the biggest accomplishment / failure
in this position?
• Give an example of something you accomplished that is

directly related to the job you are interviewing for.
• Review your resume and review the job posting
• Find the best match and use that to show how what you
accomplished will be beneficial to the company you are
interviewing with.
3. Why are you leaving your job?
• Regardless of why you left, don't speak badly

about your previous employer
• Practice your responses so you sound positive,

and clear, about your circumstances and your
goals for the future.
4. How do you handle stress and pressure?
Examples:
• React to situations, rather than to stress. That way, the

situation is handled and doesn't become stressful.
• I actually work better under pressure and I've found that I

enjoy working in a challenging environment.
• Prioritizing my responsibilities so I have a clear idea of what

needs to be done when, has helped me effectively manage
pressure on the job.
5. What are your salary expectations?
• Research salaries and know your worth.
• Be realistic
• Do not rush in

• Ex: "I'm a seasoned Retail Manager strong in developing

training programs and loss prevention techniques that have
resulted in revenue savings of over $2.3Million for
(employer's name) during the past 11 years."

• Describe the qualifications listed in the job posting,

then connect them to your skills and experience.
• Let the employer will see that you know about the
job you're interviewing for
8. Why are you the best person for the job?
• Give concrete examples of why your skills and

accomplishments make you the best candidate for
the job.
• Take a few moments to compare the job description

with your abilities, as well as mentioning what you
have accomplished in your other positions.
• Be positive and reiterate your interest in the

company and the position.
9. Is there anything I haven't told you about the job or
company that you would like to know?
Have interview questions of your own ready to ask. You

aren't simply trying to get this job - you are also
interviewing the employer to assess whether this
company and the position are a good fit for you.
10. What are your goals for the next five years /
ten years?
Don't discuss your goals for returning to school or having a

family, they are not relevant and could knock you out of
contention for the job. Rather, you want to connect your
answer to the job you are applying for. Examples of good
responses include:
My long-term goals involve growing with a company where I can

continue to learn, take on additional responsibilities, and contribute
as much of value as I can.
Do’s:
• Arrive 15 minutes early. Late attendance is never excusable.
• Clarify questions. Be sure you answered the questions the

employer really asked.
• Get the interviewer to describe the position and responsibilities

early in the conversation so you can relate your skills and
background to the position throughout the interview.
• Give your qualifications. Stress the accomplishments that are

most pertinent to the job.
Do’s – contd.
• Conduct yourself professionally. Be aware of what your

body language is saying. Smile, make eye contact, don’t
slouch and maintain composure.
• Anticipate tough questions. Prepare in advance so you can
turn apparent weaknesses into strengths.
• Dress appropriately. Make your first impression a
professional one.
• Ask questions throughout the interview. An interview
should be a mutual exchange of information, not a one-
sided conversation.
• Listen. This is probably the most important "do" of all.
not to do’s:
• Don’t answer vague questions. Rather than answering

questions you think you hear, get the employer to be more
specific and then respond.
• Never interrupt the employer. If you don’t have time to listen,
neither does the employer
• Don’t smoke, chew gum or place anything on the employer’s
desk.
not to do’s:
• Don’t be overly familiar, even if the employer is doing

all of these things.
• Don’t ramble. Long answers often make the speaker
sound apologetic or indecisive. On the other hand,
don’t answer questions with a simple "yes" or "no."
Explain whenever possible.
• Do not lie. Answer questions as truthfully as
possible. Do not make derogatory remarks about
your present or former employers or companies
2. Phone Interview
• Keep your resume in clear view, on the top of your desk, or

tape it to the wall near the phone, so it's at your fingertips
when you need to answer questions.
• Have a short list of your accomplishments available to review.
• Have a pen and paper handy for note taking.
• Turn call-waiting off so your call isn't interrupted and Record.
• If the time isn't convenient, ask if you could talk at another

time and suggest some alternatives.
• Clear the room - evict the kids and the pets. Turn off the stereo
and the TV. Close the door.
During the phone interview….
• Don't smoke, chew gum, eat, or drink.

• Do keep a glass of water handy, in case you need to wet your mouth.
• Smile. Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change the tone of
your voice.
• Speak slowly and enunciate clearly.
• Use the person's title (Mr. or Ms. and their last name.) Only use a first name if they ask
you to.
• Don't interrupt the interviewer.
• Take your time - it's perfectly acceptable to take a moment or two to collect your
thoughts.
• Give short answers.
• Remember your goal is to set-up a face-to-face interview. After you thank the
interviewer ask if it would be possible to meet in person.
3. Dress for success

• Solid color, conservative suit

• Coordinated blouse
• Moderate shoes
• Limited jewelry
• Neat, professional hairstyle
• Tan or light hosiery
• Sparse make-up & perfume
• Manicured nails
• Portfolio or briefcase
Men's Interview Attire
• Solid color, conservative suit

• White long sleeve shirt
• Conservative tie
• Dark socks, professional shoes
• Very limited jewelry
• Neat, professional hairstyle
• Go easy on the aftershave
• Neatly trimmed nails
• Portfolio or briefcase
4. The Right attitude
• Be courteous
• Listen
• Appear interested in the job
• Show signs of willingness to learn
• Do not bad mouth
• Thank the interviewer for the time spent
• If possible send a thank you note
• Leave a lasting impression
