length) on the topic below.
Advantages and disadvantages of online teaching and learning.
Answer
There is an irrefutable fact that in the current context, online teaching and learning is a
feasible alternative. Online education has a lot of benefits, but it also has a lot of
drawbacks that people have been trying to overcome.
It can be said that online teaching and learning have some noteworthy positive effects.
One evident strength is that it would flexibility in terms of time and place to study. In
other words, when students choose to study online, they have the freedom to attend
classes from anywhere at any time. Furthermore, online lectures can be recorded,
preserved, and shared using this method of learning. As a result, assisting in the study of
knowledge becomes easier and more convenient. In many locations, especially with the
Covid-19 epidemic wreaking havoc on human health around the world, online learning
has emerged as a suitable educational tool. Without needing to travel to schools or
centers, teachers and students can still teach, study, and review online at home. Another
reason is that it would help save time and study costs. Unlike traditional training
techniques, online learning allows students to save a significant amount of travel time.
Simultaneously, this teaching technique assists teachers and students in maximizing the
cost of printing papers, travel expenses, parking, and other similar expenses. Teachers can
create online lecture content for various subjects to use in several online classrooms at the
same time, allowing students to actively study on their own and discuss concerns with the
teacher. As a result, teachers can save time creating classes, travel time, and the cost of
renting classroom space. Last but not least, online education helps apply modern
technology to learning and makes it easy to systematize knowledge. People are
progressively having access to various new digital technologies as part of the rapid
industrial revolution 4.0. According to Appota, a developer and distributor of a digital
entertainment production platform, roughly 70% of Vietnam's population uses
smartphones linked to the Internet as of May 2021. This is also a good situation for all
pupils to have easy access to all materials and to use contemporary technology to learn
through electronic devices. Furthermore, as a result of the digital technological revolution,
teachers and students learning online may readily communicate knowledge via video,
audio, photos, and other forms of media. As a result, according to the unavoidable
direction of society, establishing a learning environment where activities are alive,
exciting, and have access to information technology. Furthermore, many online learning
programs today provide teachers and students with amazing features that allow them to
effortlessly organize information and engage in tracking learning progress and outcomes.
Thereby, they can quickly comprehend the teaching and learning time, as well as the
progress made in the learning process, and devise effective learning solutions for
themselves.
Despite these aforementioned benefits, several drawbacks do exist. First, both teachers
and students have limitations on internet connection and technology. It means that
connecting to the internet and equipping teaching technology is still a big challenge for
online classes in Vietnam. Not everyone has a reliable internet connection and a computer
powerful enough to support streaming. Despite the fact that the internet network has
grown in recent years, many students in remote areas still lack access to the internet and
technological gadgets for studying. During the questioning session of the Minister of
Education and Training, Nguyen Kim Son on the morning of November 11, he said,
"Actually, 1.8 million students (not 1.5 million as reported at the beginning of the school
year) does not currently have any devices for online learning". However, some people
may have all the necessary technology but struggle with how to use it. For example, it
may be difficult for older teachers or learners to master all the manipulations using new
technology. Second, it affects not only mental health but also physical health. Students are
easily sidetracked when studying online if they take their gaze away from the computer.
The majority of them are unable to keep up with the lecture as a result of this. They
become anxious and stressed when they try to focus for long periods of time. As a result,
assignments, debates, and homework pile up. After taking online classes, many students
grow fatigued, even exhausted. According to a recent survey by Kaspersky, 55% of
children in the Asia-Pacific region had to switch to online learning because of the
epidemic. The report found that 74% of children do not adapt to online learning because
of spending too much time in front of screens. 57% of students find the lecture more
difficult to understand than learning in class. Furthermore, increased screen time and
information overload make it difficult for students to memorize knowledge and create eye
strain, which can lead to headaches or nearsightedness. Besides, the human body will
suffer as a result of poor sitting position and a lack of discipline. Furthermore, sitting in
one location for an extended period of time might lead to weight gain. Many people are
forced to stay still for long amounts of time while they learn or teach online, as a result, if
you sit in the wrong position, you may experience joint pain, shoulder pain, or even spinal
degeneration. Furthermore, pupils who study online for an extended period of time
become vitamin D deficient. Many other health problems emerge when people are not
exposed to sunlight, eat an unhealthy diet, and do not exercise born. These issues affect
both students and teachers. Finally, students have no concentration and are distracted by
entertainment platforms. Students connect with each other via computer displays or
phones in an online education setting. As a result, one of the most difficult aspects of
online learning for many students is the inability to focus on a computer or phone screen
for extended periods of time. Students are easily sidetracked when studying online at
home by social media sites and other websites, among other things.
In conclusion, there are plus points to online education regarding flexibility in terms of
study time and location, savings in time and study expenditures, and the use of current
technology to learning and knowledge systematization. However, the downside would
emerge consequently in terms of internet connection and technology limits, affect health
problems and no concentration and are distracted by entertainment platforms. Online
education, in my opinion, is the safest and most suitable type of education in the context
of the fast developing Covid-19 outbreak, both in terms of avoiding infection and
ensuring knowledge. Teachers and students will be able to develop more effective online
teaching and learning techniques based on these features, assuring the greatest learning
outcomes.
