How does the media constructively and/or adversely influence on furthering physical,
political and cultural identities of any country?
National identity is as a social bond of a group of people bound together by languages, cultures,
some common heritages. And the national identity is not any unchangeable things rather it is
continuously changing by historical and realistic context. In this new age of media the mass
media have become the principal platform for building national identity. Media is helping
countries to build an identity about them.
The mass media play the rule to construct the mind of people. What they show, they matter for
Cultural identity as they present and spread different symbols; they represents ethnic identity as
they spread beliefs; they show demotic identity as they spread norms and values and they
create national identity as all of these types of identity culminate in a nation. For example if we
open television now we can easily understand we are Bengali speaking country looking the
appearance of presenter of different programme we can easily understand whether it is pohela
boisakh or national days or ramadan days. By watching any western media we also can
understand their cultures. Different cultural shows, sports on media also represent cultural
identity. Besides this international identity also builds by this media. As Bangladesh is growing
economically media is covering it and our international identity is growing according to this
news. Seeing the GDP growth people are thinking that despite the hit from the pandemic the
Bangladeshi economy is recovering fast. But they do not know the actual situation of
Bangladesh . Moreover Dhaka is mostly polluted country of the world as this news get huge
coverage people now identifying as worst city to live. That’s how media help to create an
identity.
All of the countries of the world do not hold same power they are divided into superpower and
peripheral countries. And information flow always remains one way. Those who holds power
they shapes information according to their self interest and then they broadcast that
information. Which nations are peripheral they receive the news from the superpower
controlled media. So news which we get are not objective always. Snd superpowers are
controlling the information flow to control other countries. For example invent Iraq and
Afghanistan USA uses their media power. Their media continuously cover that Iraq had mass
destruction weapons and Saddam Hossein supporting terrorism and Iraq’s general peoples life in
danger. But the western media never covers the actual reason of US to invade Iraq. Never tried
to find if there actually were any mass destruction weapons or not. Western media was
successful to establish a terrorist identity of Iraq among mass people.and as the peripheral
countries also follow those information mass people go thought it was right to invade Iraq. In
the case of Afghanistan invasion we can see the same thing. After the nine eleven they
published Afghan as terrorist and invade them. In 2021 when USA was leaving them then they
started to cover Taliban as terrorist, inhuman. Rarely any western media publish Taliban’s point
of view, mass peoples view of Afghan. So media has the power to cultivate peopl’s consents.

In the case of Rohingya Bangladeshi media has covered them as vulnerable, they lost their
shelter, basic right etc. but in the media of Myanmar they are publishing that these people were
muslims and terrorist, they were part of Bangladesh in the past so their army is right. Thus
media also creating an identiy crisis.
