The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)

assured Filipinos that there was no threat of a tsunami hitting the Philippines after a

7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off on the West Coast of Canada, yesterday

morning.

A tsunami hit Hawaii last night, but the waves hitting some shore were

smaller than expected. The US national weather service issued a tsunami warning

for areas off the coast of British Columbia, Southern Alaska and Hawaii, but,

PHIVOLCS said that the Philippines were too far from Canada to be affected.

The department of foreign affairs said no Filipinos were hurt in the quake.

Its spokesperson, Raul Hernadez, said the Philippine consulate in Vancouver,

Canada described the Queen Charlotte region where the temblor struck as a remote

and sparsely populated area in British Columbia at 11:04 a.m. (Philippine Time).
