1) Activity 2: Content Notes (13 mins)

Make sure to read it carefully. 

Impacts of Technology on Learning

1. Technology is a Teaching Tool – computers provide us with an interactive audio-visual medium. A

large number of students can be addressed simultaneously with the help of projectors, screens,
microphones, and speakers.
2. Technology has made student life easy – technology has made the life of students easier.
Students use different software and tools to make presentations and projects, instead of using pen and
paper.
3. Easy to store information – due to technology, data storage has become much easier. It takes a
few seconds to type or copy-paste various information. A small pen drive can store a huge amount of
information. Computers enable better and strong storage of data as compared to managing hard
copies.
4. Digital Classrooms – the advanced technology can help us see the entire syllabus online and then
decide which courses and subjects we should opt for. Interactive digitized boards can be used by
students for drawing figures, making diagrams, doing mathematical calculations, etc.
5. Information is easily accessible – the internet search engines are a source of immense
information. They are now used as an effective tool for searching information. All this is possible in just
one or two clicks. Both teachers and students are benefited from this.
6. Technology has removed space and time limitations – the students and teachers can be a part of
one virtual classroom, even if they are physically far away from each other.

FAQs

Here’s your takeaway!

If you have questions that you cannot ask your teacher, this may help you clarify things out.

1. Is it advisable to use technology as a teaching tool, all the time?

 Technology is a big help to the teaching and learning process but we cannot avoid using
traditional teaching especially in certain circumstances.
2. How can we maximize technology in teaching?
 Aside from using it as a teaching tool, you may give your students activities or sample exercises
related to technology. Give them practices or requirements that they can maximize technology
as their primary tool.

KEY TO CORRECTIONS
Activity 3: Possible answer
I.
Positive
1. It motivates students to learn more.
2. It may help a student to gain control of their education.
3. It is easy for the teachers to transmit learning effectively.
Negative
1. It caused distractions to the students while learning.
2. It may tend to discourage students from discovering knowledge on their own.
3. It caused students to depend on technology all the time.
II.
1. Teachers should know how to manipulate technology. Whatever good intentions they may have in
shifting to an online class, it will not be effective without the guidance of the teacher.
2. Technology helps the teacher to explain or transmit information easily and effectively. Especially for
a topic that is hard to explain without a sample or presentation, technology is a big contribution.
3. Technology has a big impact on teaching, but we cannot control what will possibly happen. To
provide quality teaching for your students, you should be ready and prepared for your other plan. Do
not compromise learning with a small problem like this.

What is multimedia?
 Multimedia is a broad term for combining multiple media formats. Whenever text, audio, still
images, animation, video, and interactivity are combined, the result is multimedia.
 Multimedia is content that uses a combination of different content forms such as text, audio,
images, animations, video, and interactive content.
 Multimedia contrasts with media that use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-only
or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material.

Multimedia-learning Principles

1. Spatial Contiguity Principle states that any text and visual content should be contiguous, that is
they should be close to each other on the page or screen.
2. Temporal Contiguity Principle states that verbal and visual content should be contiguous in time,
both forms of content should be presented together in time rather than asynchronously.
3. Split Attention Principle states that when showing visual content, it is preferable to present words
as verbal content rather than as text on the screen.
4. Modality Principle states that students learn better when text is presented in verbal form (as
narration) rather than in visual form (as written text).
5. Redundancy Principle further refines the description of how multimedia learning is most effective.
6. Coherence Principle states that background sounds and music take away from the learner’s
experience rather than adding to it.

If you have questions that you cannot ask your teacher, this may help you clarify things out.

1. What makes multimedia effective as a tool in teaching and learning?

 Multimedia is now the main aid in teaching and learning. It helps students to acquire information
easily and for the teacher to transmit knowledge effectively.
2. What are other ways to use multimedia in the classroom?

3. What are the limitations of using

technology in learning?

1) Activity 2: Content Notes (13 mins)

Make sure to read it carefully. 

Technology as a Tool
 Technology is a tool that can change the nature of learning.
 First and foremost, educators want students to learn. It is
certainly not enough to tell educators that they need to use
the boxes and wires that have invaded their schools simply
because they are expensive or because students need to
know how to use the latest widget. If it’s clear that
technological tools will help them achieve that goal,
educators will use those tools.

This document is the property of PHINMA EDUCATION

EDU052: Field Study 3
Student Activity Sheets Module #11

 Technology lends itself to exploration. But before the technology can be used effectively,
exploration must be valued as important to both teaching and learning. In a technology-rich
classroom, students might search the Web for information, analyze river water, chart the results
and record what they've learned on the computer.
 In such an environment, educators can encourage a diversity of outcomes rather than insisting
on one right answer. They can evaluate learning in multiple ways, instead of relying
predominately on traditional paper and pencil tests. And perhaps most importantly, teachers and
students can move from pursuing individual efforts to being part of learning teams, which may
include students from all over the world.
 Activities and learning environments must be carefully guided and structured so learners are fully
engaged in their learning. Students must learn that exploration doesn't mean just running around
doing what they want and ending up who knows where. Educators must recognize that if
students are investigating and asking questions, writing about what they're learning, and doing
those things in an authentic context, then they are learning to read and write and think.

Choosing and Using the Tools

 Teachers must determine how technology tools are used and they must have a hand in
designing the staff development process that trains them.
 Teachers must take responsibility for helping design the staff development process so that it
meets their needs – so that it includes time to practice using the equipment, to watch teachers’
model lessons that infuse technology into the curriculum, and to mentor other teachers.

Examples of Technology as Support for Instruction

 Digital Readers and Tablets – increasingly, schools are looking to
replace the bulkier hard-copy textbooks with digital ones that are
accessible via a tablet.
 3D Printing – 3D printing has already seen an impressive
application in the world at large. In the classroom setting, 3D printing
can create hands-on models that students can investigate and
interact with. For example, students could learn about the geography
of an area by observing a 3D map of it.
 Virtual Reality – technology for virtual reality, augmented reality and
mixed reality is rapidly developing. One of the primary uses for this
technology in the classroom is to take students on virtual field trips to
places otherwise inaccessible. For example, a student could take a
virtual field trip to ancient Egypt or the bottom of the ocean.
 Cloud Technology – it enables information to be stored, shared, and
accessed on any device that's connected to the internet.
