COURSE PSCI 505: Use of Technology in Teaching Science

DEVELOPER AND THEIR

BACKGROUND

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course explores technology that has been designed for use in the
classroom. The utilization and evaluation of various technologies and their
appropriateness for the Science curriculum will be emphasized. Students
will identify, develop and apply a variety of technological skills congruent to
their educational technology philosophy. This course also explores how
technology may be used as a tool in the 21st Century Science classroom to
facilitate changes in the ways teachers teach and students learn, and
ultimately to stimulate positive changes in education. It also examines how
educators can increase their own productivity by using technology for
communication and collaboration among colleagues, staff, parents,
students, and the larger community. Students will examine the benefits and
possible drawbacks of technology use in their classroom and learn how to
integrate technology effectively into their teaching as a means to promote
student learning.

TITLE DIGITAL RESOURCES

I. RATIONALE The education system has adapted to digital society. Digital media
and new technologies have been introduced in classrooms around
the world, leading to teachers introducing and using Digital
Educational Resources (DERs), and making school and DERs
inseparable. In recent years, many digital educational resources
have been introduced into classrooms. These materials are defined
as resources designed for educational purposes, published in a
digital format, and selected by teachers to fulfil various objectives:
transmitting content, mediating the learning experience, provoking
encounters, developing student skills, or making assessments.
This module introduces learners to the concept of digital literacy.
Learners will be encouraged to reflect on their roles as digital
citizens.

INSTRUCTION TO THE USERS To the teachers, this module will serve as a guide to discuss the
different types of digital resources that we may use in teaching
science. There are also proposed activities, evaluation and
assignment in this module that will monitor your students’ progress in
your class.
To the students who will use this module as a guide, these are the
things you need to do;

1. Read the directions carefully.

2. Answer the pretest before going through the lessons.
3. Take note and record points for clarification.
4. Do the activities and understand the lesson.
5. Answer the assignment and study it as preparation o the next
lesson.

PRE-TEST Directions: Read each item carefully and ENCIRCLE the letter of
your correct answer.

1. It is a software, applications (apps), programs, or websites

that students use to plan, document, organize, and analyze
content
a. Digital Academic Content Tool
b. Digital Productivity Tool
c. Digital Communication Tool
2. It refers to the materials that require computer access
whether through a personal computer or a hand held mobile
device.
a. Digital Resources
b. Non-Digital Resources
c. Traditional Resources
3. It is a set of opinions or beliefs of a group or an individual.
a. Ethics
b. Ideology
c. Morality
4. All are resources used in communication EXCEPT
____________.
a. Flipgrid
b. Google Meet
c. Socrative
5. All are resources used in Academic Content EXCEPT
____________.
a. Grammarly
b. Kahoot
c. Powtoon

II. LEARNING At the end of this module, you will be able to:
OBJECTIVES

a. understand what Digital Resources are;

b. cite and elaborate examples of Digital
Resources;
c. explain hoe Digital Resources are selected,
acquired and organized;
d. appreciate the importance of Digital Resources

1. CONTENT HIDDEN PICTURE GAME

A. PREPARATORY
ACTIVITIES
Instructions: The teacher will click the colored boxes and, in every
click, it reveals part of the whole picture. The first person to chat
his/her correct answer on the chat box will receive 2 points while the
second person will receive 1 point.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSION PROPER

DIGITAL RESOURCES
WHAT ARE DIGITAL RESOURCES?

The term Digital Learning Resources (DLRs) refers to digital resources such as applications (apps),
software, programs, or websites that engage students in learning activities and support students’
learning goals.
Digital resources are those materials that require computer access whether through a personal computer
or a hand held mobile device.

HOW TO SELECT AND ACQUIRED YOUR DIGITAL RESOURCES?

1. Appoint TASKFORCE members who have expertise with different types of materials
 The Task Force (TF) was charged with “compiling/reviewing/disseminating selection criteria for
electronic resources to supplement traditional selection criteria (e.g., authorship, content,
provenance, accuracy, relevance to institutional mission, and subject matter) used by libraries,
archives and museums. Supplemental criteria include: design, use, timeliness, permanence,
quality of links to other sites, value added utility beyond print version, originating domain,
downloading capability, uniqueness, reverse links, etc.”
2. Undertake an 'environmental scan' of existing selection criteria for traditional resources
3. Undertake an 'environmental scan' of existing selection criteria for e-resources.

To further illustrate the complexity of e-resource, selection criteria must also consider

1. distracting visual elements;

2. what types of materials or subject areas are intentionally included/excluded;
3. inclusion of easy-to-use alert systems;
4. availability in multiple formats;
5. inclusion of “freely accessible” vs. “paid” resources
6. can and how does it integrate with other systems including course management systems

C. CLOSURE After the discussion, the teacher will ask the students to give addition
ACTIVITIES examples of:
