The Rules
• Read the rules!
– Understand what it is that is required!
– You will never earn back penalties!

The Constraints
• Resource
• Facilities
• Funding
• Capability

What can you do to tackle your teams

constraints?

Sponsorship
• What is possible within the time, people, facilities
and money?
• Who you approach
– Money
– Parts
• Technical capability/support
• Availability
– Facilities
– Advice (technical, management, financial etc)
• The Approach: What you can offer the sponsor?

Sponsorship
• The Approach: What you can offer the
sponsor?
– Think beyond name on the car
– What is value to the sponsor?
– Product Development: Testing/data
• In the lab
• On the track
– A New Market

Planning
• Efficient Use of Time
– Management
– Tools
• Planning (Mind manager/mindjet)
• DOE (DOE XL, JMP, Simulations)
–x
• 6S

Designing & Developing a Car

• Integration
• Use previous cars & teams experience
• Use previous years tools, develop where
appropriate
• Know what you want to do and why
• Capturing Requirements: QFD etc
• SMART Goals
• Data driven decisions
• Understand and quantify the compromises, trade
off studies, consensus as a team.

Innovation
• Simple (Mechanical, Materials, Process etc)
• Question what has been done before.
Where does it fail? How could it be better?
• Working with Industry
• What can you do that would help your
work?

Documentation
• Objectives of Tests
• What you did & why
• How you did it, observations
• Results & Conclusions
• How you’d do it differently next time

Here follows some examples of design, some

good, others less so!

Suspension –
Rod end in
bending, due to
both brake
torque but also
damper
alignment..
Double trouble!

6

Suspension – Wide toe base,

no rod ends in bending, 2
piece adjustable upright, thin
wheel centre

7
12/6/2010

Suspension – Elegant 2 piece

upright design. Uses serations
at the top to adjust camber –
chance of misaligning teeth.
Also, have to adjust toe every
time camber is adjusted.

Use of Al MMC brake discs –

very light, requires special
pads and diamond tip tools to
machine

8

Suspension – 2 piece
adjustable upright
uses shims to alter
camber. Camber
change won’t effect
toe.

Machined from billet

material – expensive

Well supported
floating disc brake

Suspension – Rear subframe

is very narrow – question
lateral stiffness.

Geometry will have poor

camber compensation.

Rocker bolts mounted in

single shear

Inboard mounted rear brakes

– lowers unsprung mass

Drivetrain – flexi
couplings, carbon
driveshafts

Suspension:
Carbon fibre
components,
2 piece rear
upright

Suspension – Rod end in

bending, poor rotor design

Suspension – Easy
adjustable anti roll bar
