The Return of Death Penalty

This modern world has brought about plenty of social crises, including a rise in
criminal activities. Almost every day, I could hear the news about a person being raped and
brutally killed, a person being stabbed to death, a person being sold for monetary gains, a
person being mistreated in one's household, and a person being snatched of having a peaceful
life.

When an individual is sentenced to death by a court for committing a capital crime,

this is referred to as the death penalty. It punishes offenders who commit certain serious
crimes for being grievous, odious, and hateful offenses, and these are also the same offenses
that Filipinos are infuriated with. And this fueled the fire within their hearts which led to calls
on reviving the death penalty.

At the Nineteenth Congress, several house representatives are seeking to revive the
death penalty on certain heinous crimes. The justice system of the Philippines does not seem
to befit the revival of the death penalty. In view of the excessive number of erroneous
convictions, the death penalty should be rejected. It is also inefficient, promotes racial
discrimination, and feeds a vicious circle of violence.

The Supreme Court of the Philippines alone stated in 2004 that 71.77% of death
penalty verdicts rendered by inferior courts were erroneous. It is terrifying to think that you
can be put to death for a crime you did not commit. For this reason, the justice system needs
to be fixed first before taking this into consideration.

We would question ourselves, as believers in Christ, what kind of person and what
kind of deeds we ought to be for we believe in Christ. When the death penalty was
appropriate, Christ frequently manifested mercy. Think of when David had committed
murder and adultery, God did not persist that his life should be taken. God is the one who
creates humans and the only one who can dismantle his creation.
