Problem 1 A hollow box beam ABC of length L is supported at end A by a 20-mm diameter pin that passes through the beam and its supporting pedestals (see figure Prob.1). The roller support at B is located at distance L/3 from end A and the beam is subjected to the load P equal to 10 kN at end C. (a) Determine the reactive forces in the supports (b) Determine the average shear stress in the pin at support A. (c) Determine the average bearing stress between the pin and the box beam if the wall thickness of the beam is equal to 12 mm. Prob. 1
Problem 2 The horizontal rigid beam ABCD is
supported by vertical bars BE and CF and is loaded by vertical forces P1 =400 kN and P2 =360 kN acting at points A and D, respectively (see figure Prob. 2). Bars BE and CF are made of steel (E= 200 GPa) and have cross-sectional areas ABE =11,100 mm2 and ACF =9,280 mm2. The distances between various points on the bars are shown in the figure. Determine the normal and shear stresses acting on all faces of stress elements located in the bar BE oriented at (a) an angle θ = 30°, and in the bar CF oriented at Prob. 2 (b) an angle θ = 45°. In each case, show the stresses on a sketch of a properly oriented element.
Problem 3 A circular bar AB with ends fixed against rotation
has a hole extending for half of its length (see figure). The outer diameter of the bar is d 2 =3.0 in. and the diameter of the hole is d 1 = 2.4 in. The total length of the bar is L=50 in. At what distance x from the left-hand end of the bar should a torque T 0 be applied so that (a) The reactive torques at the supports will be equal? (b)The maximum shear stresses on two elements will be equal?
