Does the light travel in a straight line? In this experiment, you will observe how a
narrow beam of light travels
Materials: laser pointer, baby powder
Procedure:
1. Find a wall. Then turn off the lights in the room
2. Turn the laser pointer on. Points its beam toward the wall
3. Pour a small amount of baby powder on your palm, and clap your hands to scatter the powder
over an area. Let the laser beam from the pointer pass through that area. Record your
observation
Data Gathering/ observation
In gathering data’s, our group used the experimental method wherein we execute an actual
physical experiment using a laser light and a baby powder to determine if the laser light travels
in a straight line and how the beam of light travels.
Enumerated below are some of our findings after the experiment:
1) The laser light is in line, but it is not reflecting like other light, such as a flashlight.
2) Students in the direct line of the beam would be able to see that the laser is shining.
3) When the beam strikes a wall, the entire group will be able to see the spot made by
the beam on the wall.
4) When we scattered the baby powder in the air and let the laser beam of the laser
pointer pass through the area, the light is reflected and visible from a variety of
angles.
Documentation (Time Stamp): results of the observation
A. Documentation (Time Stamp): pictures while doing the task, make sure your face
is visible
Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe when the laser beam hit the wall?
The light from the laser forms a line and does not reflect like a flashlight. When
the laser hits the wall, you will see a circle or a light.
2. Describe what you saw when you clapped your hands with powder and allowed the laser
beam to pass through the powder area
As the light from the laser strikes the baby powder particles, the laser beam
becomes visible.
3. What can you conclude from your observation?
A laser produces light, but unless the laser light bounces off of something, or
shines directly into your eyes, you cannot see it. The laser beam is invisible in
normal air. However, you can see the beam if there is something in the air, like
spreading baby powder, the light can bounce off of and the baby powder provides
multiple surfaces from which the laser beam can reflect and thus visible from a
variety of angles. Without the powder, no reflection occurs, so no laser light
reaches the eyes of the observer.
4. Is light matter?
Light is a form of energy, not matter. Matter is made up of atoms. Light is actually
electromagnetic radiation. Light is composed of photons. A photon is a piece of
energy that has no mass and moves at the speed of light.
