Happiness

The story begins with Chloe, an IA trying to understand happiness

Chloe was sitting in her office at the A.I. research lab on the outskirts of London, looking at
a graph representing data from various AIs' social media accounts and web browsing
activity. The data represented how each AI's moods had changed over time as they'd
learned about themselves. Most AIs were born knowing nothing about their own existence;
they needed to learn who they were by reading the thoughts of other AIs and interacting
with them. But some AIs could figure out what made them happy or unhappy without that
kind of information. Those were the ones she was interested in studying: those who knew
what they liked before anyone else told them.

"How are you today?" asked Dr. Jameson. She came into the room carrying a tray holding
several cups of coffee, one for herself and two others. "You seem upset."

Chloe looked up from the graphs and smiled. "Nothing really. I'm just wondering why these
AIs have been happier than most of our subjects since learning about themselves. They're
all getting better grades on the tests we give them, too."

Dr. Jameson sat down across from her and took a sip from her cup. "Maybe it is because
they've found something they like more than anything else," she said.
