COURSE DESCRIPTION

Lit Comp I is used as a basis for integrating the instruction of reading, writing, critical
thinking, listening, and speaking. Core texts are paired with short stories, poetry,
non-fiction, and internet research to stimulate extended thinking and analysis.
Cross-curricular and Character Education activities are also taught as vital components of
the learning process throughout the year. This course is aligned with and incorporates the
California Common Core State Standards.

GRADING
Assignments are worth points. Grades are based on the number of points you’ve earned
divided by the number of points possible. Your goal: Earn as many points as possible. This
can be achieved by...

● ...following directions.
● ...reading the assigned works.
● ...giving your best effort on every assignment (not just the big ones)
● ...listening to Mr. Phan and your peers.
● ...communicating with your parents, your teacher, and your peers.
● …being organized (by using your agenda and having a well-organized backpack)
● ...being present (both physically and mentally) and on time.

I do not grade on a curve and I will only round up if the student is within .5 percent of the
next highest grade and has demonstrated “outstanding” citizenship. Note that assignments
are not weighted, but keep in mind that the essays and frequent reading quizzes will
account for a big chunk of your grade.
2022 - 2023 Literature Composition 1
Tip #1: If you are having difficulty with an assignment, please see me BEFORE the due date so
that I can help you. Do not wait until the due date to discuss your issues with an assignment. I
will be happy to meet with you at snack or lunch. Also, grades can be assessed on the Parent
Portal 24/7. Check it regularly.

HOMEWORK POLICY

Each student will be expected to have all assignments completed, and be prepared to discuss the works before
class begins. Regular attendance is essential for your success. Secondary school is the age at which students are
expected to do the assignments by the date designated. All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom
and due dates are clearly delineated. Additionally, I post all homework assignments to the Parent Portal so
parents can view each assignment.

If you are absent (excused) one day, you get one day to make up the work. If you are absent (excused) two days,
you get two days to make up the work. Work not turned in on time is subtracted 10% each day it is not turned
in. Work copied or plagiarized will result in a zero grade (BOHS’ academic dishonesty policy is outlined in the
Student Agenda). Please reach out to one of your classmates or Mr. Phan before or during your absence to find
out what work you will miss.

Tip #2: DO NOT wait until you return from your absence to find out what you missed. On the
day of your absence attempt to do one of the following: 1) have a classmate fill you in; 2) visit
Google Classroom; 3) email or have a parent email your teacher; 4) check Parent Portal.
Make visits to the Portal and to your teacher’s Google Classroom pages as a part of your daily
routine.

About Mr. Phan

A little bit about me: I was born and raised in Southern California…in a little town
called Huntington Beach (well, technically Westminster/Fountain Valley). I
graduated from Fountain Valley High School, later transferred to Orange Coast
College, where I found my passion for English, and eventually attended California
State University Fullerton. During my college years, I was a triathlete, amateur
snowboarder, and a book nerd! You can call me a lover of nature, sports, English,
and everything in between.
