Summative Test in Contemporary

Philippine Arts from the Regions

Prepared by:

REIZY M. BATAC
RHEA M. MARTURILLAS
II. INTRODUCTION

The respondents are come from grade 12 HUMMS. These students are come
section 4, their adviser is Ms. Miesie S. Añata. I conduct test to these students to test
the reliability and validity of the test given.
We chose Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions. There are seven
elements in art. They are color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value. The ten
common principles of art are balance, emphasis, harmony, movement, pattern,
proportion, repetition, rhythm, unity, and variety. Many of these concepts are not only
related to one another but also overlap to create an artistic vision.
Philippine contemporary arts can be described into visual arts, literary arts
and performing arts. Visual art is an expression of artistic ideas through images,
structures, and tactile work. Some visual artworks are integrated which means it
combines several mediums to create new and unique artwork. Painting, sculpture,
architecture, and film are examples of visual arts.

Painting

Painting the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain
aesthetic qualities, in a two-dimensional visual language. The elements of this
language – its shapes, lines, colors, tones, and textures – are used in various ways
to produce sensations of volume, space, movement, and light on a flat surface. The
first paintings here in the Philippines are commissioned works during Spanish
colonization. Here are some paintings from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Sculpture

The sculpture is an art form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into
three-dimensional art objects. Filipino sculptors came to be known in the middle of
the 19th century. These are some of the sculptures in the Philippines.
Architecture

Architecture is the art and practice of designing and constructing buildings

(Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary & Thesaurus). In relation to that,
Philippine architecture was characterized as simple, rational, and functional. In the
20th century the young Filipino who studied in American colleges and institutes
introduced the neoclassic style in building structures. However, after World War II,
real estate development started to take place (Sandagan & Sayseng, 2016). To
illustrate these architectural designs, these are some examples from Luzon, Visayas
and Mindanao.

Film

Film is a form of visual art use to imitate experiences that communicate ideas,
stories, or feelings with the use of moving images. It is also called a movie or motion
picture. Moreover, the art form that is the result of the film is called cinema (Faber &
Walters, 2003). The film industry in the Philippines started in 1897. In the
contemporary period, martyr wife, superhero, action, melodramas, and comedies are
some of the usual subjects and themes in the Philippine films. Some films in the
Philippines are presented below.

Literature

According to Lombardi (2020), literature is a term used to describe written and

sometimes spoken material. Derived from the Latin word literature meaning "writing
formed with letters," literature most commonly refers to works of the creative
imagination, including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, and in some instances,
journalism, and song. These are some examples of Philippine literature.

Furthermore, there are also Philippine contemporary art forms that can be
described as performance arts. A person doing certain actions and movements in
front of an audience that go along with sound in a space and time is called
Performing Arts.

Music and Theater

Music is a collection of coordinated sound or sounds. According to Ramon P.

Santos in his article entitles Contemporary Music, Contemporary music in the
Philippines usually refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and elements
from twentieth-century art music in the West, as well as the latest trends and musical
styles in the entertainment industry. Filipino Music had already a rich and unique
musical tradition long before westerners set foot on our native land. Music was
present in every stage of our ancestors’ lives — from birth to death, in blissful or
tragic times. Below are some Music from the different Regions of our country.
Theatre is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present
the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place.
The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through
combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, or dance. Some of the Theater Play
in the Philippines are the following.

Dance

Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and
within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing
energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself. Dances in the Philippines
vary from Region to Region and below are some dances of the different regions.

Materials used in Contemporary Art

• Contemporary artists feel free to experiment with materials and use
technology to explore possibilities.
• Contemporary artists salvage materials that can be recycled and made into
creative forms.
• They can make artworks that combine structure and wood and interact with
the wind to make music.
Chime Halo
The hanging bamboo chimes that create sound when blown by the wind done
by Cavite-born artist Imply Pilapil.
Project Belonging
• Los Banos, Laguna artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan’s Project Belonging
gathered used objects, clothes, personal accessories and many other things
and compress them into cube-shapes.
• These represent the boxes sent by Overseas Filipino Workers to their family
left behind.
• Moving abroad, the couple artists collected hundreds of rubber slippers used
by inmates in Singapore Changi prison and made these into artwork in the
form of wings that stand on metal support.
• They combine various found objects to create a metaphor of everyday human
life and depict issues of identity, journey, migration and displacement.

Some artists combine indigenous materials with textile and mount these on
painted flat surface.
Paper as an art medium is also explored by artists, like Mona Alcudia of Cebu
who makes solid forms as well as transparent artworks using paper.
In outdoor sculpture, there is a lot of use of brass welded together and
mounted on concrete.
Wood and glass are used for indoor sculpture. Found objects are combined
and are covered with resin.
Painting is no longer confined to canvas hung on the wall. They can also be
found on ceilings and floors. Some are done outdoors, like Singapore ArtBridge
which was painted by Batanes-born artist Pacita Abad with 2, 350 multiple colors.
Many local artists lead the community or students in painting murals on the wall to
make a more pleasant environment and to raise consciousness towards
environmental protection.
In architecture, there is an extensive use of glass and steel. Color
combination is either complementary or strong contrasting, such as orange and blue,
red and white. Over the years, there have been a lot of building construction, such
as malls, convention centers, business process centers, industrial parks and
government service buildings.
In performance art, artists use variety of props such as rope, plastic, textile,
and found objects. Paint is also used for body art. An example is Cagayan de Oro
artist Nicolas Aca who paints his body to project an effect.

Technology has also redefined art in many ways.

Some examples are:

(a) light structures and floor drawings using colored laser beans and smoke;
(b) tubes hanging on the ceiling that respond to viewer’s movements, sound
and touch;
(c) a wall-climbing robot holding a paint; and
(d) a pen controlled by a software program to create certain patterns.
Contemporary art is significant also because it reflects our society and
culture. It mirrors the many changes that we've had over the course of our
lifetimes. There are also well-known Filipinos that we should be proud of because of
their greatness in contemporary arts.

o A cutting-edge artist responds to the situations and his or her aesthetic

sensibilities which can be regularly drawn from their own way of life.

o Along with that, artists can also introduce new thoughts and innovations.

o An artist can create propaganda and support country wide identification.

o But the most celebrated artists could be folks that observe their very own actual
truths in service of their own thoughts.

o In trend, the significance of modern-day arts within the Philippines may also be
located in its reputation by means of patrons in the nation at large.

o I consider the subsequent Western artwork motion which has already began.

o All you could do is paint as your inner voice directs you, free from expectations,
unconcerned together with your location in art history.

Contemporary Art Techniques and Performance Practices

Filipinos are proven to be one of the most creative and colorful people in the
world. The types of arts that are produced in different regions, each region has its
unique specialties or product to take pride. Contemporary artists found used bottles,
hay, rice stalks, plastic straw, and other recyclable materials useful in creating
artworks. A real artists sees the beauty of art even the peelings of garlic and corn.
They create artworks from wood, wire, thread, rattan, metal and leaves. The real
artists see the beauty even from the peeling of garlic and corn.

Philippines is very rich in natural resources. We can maximize the use of

natural resources even in creating arts. Arts express the artistic feelings towards any
aspect of life. Due to a fire though, none of the original takas were saved. Taka
making became more popular during the American colonization period when there
was an excess of newsprint. And because Pinoys hate wasting anything, the people
of Paete decided to create more takas and even diversified into different animals and
not just the traditional red horse.

Defining Contemporary Arts Contemporary Art Strictly speaking, the term

"contemporary art" refers to art made and produced by artists living today. Today's
artists work in and respond to a global environment that is culturally diverse,
technologically advancing, and multifaceted. Working in a wide range of mediums,
contemporary artists often reflect and comment on modern day society.

Contemporary Art Contemporary art is the art of today, produced by artists

who are living in the twenty-first century. Contemporary art provides an opportunity
to reflect on contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves, and the
world around us. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally
diverse, and technologically advancing world. Their art is a dynamic combination of
materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that challenge traditional boundaries
and defy easy definition.

Contemporary Art Contemporary art mirrors contemporary culture and society,

offering teachers, students, and general audiences a rich resource through which to
consider current ideas and rethink the familiar. Diverse and eclectic, contemporary
art is distinguished by the very lack of a uniform organizing principle, ideology, or -
ism.

Contemporary Performance • Contemporary performance is hybrid work that

integrates text, dance, objects, music, costumes, lighting, image, sound, sets, and
vocal expression into complex interactive systems. • Contemporary performance
collages are often non narrative, technically rigorous, and carefully orchestrated
anarchic chaos. They unsettle perception, demand critical engagement from
audiences, address conceptual debates within aesthetics, draw on a diverse range
of cultural interests, and bring pleasure to populations across the globe.”

GaMaBa Awards (Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan)

Observation

Observation is clearly the bread and butter of daily learning, but to discuss it
in relation to assessment can feel slightly taboo. However, we never question an
early learning teacher’s right to assess students through observation. We accept that
physical education teachers use observation as the foundation of their assessment
practice; coaching requires observing.
When we observe learners, we are looking for thinking patterns, processes,
and approaches. We are tuning into hesitations and missteps. In effect, we are
watching learning as it develops, noticing the ways our learners make decisions and
take action in moments of confidence and in times of challenge. Through
observation, we can intervene, re-direct, praise, and reinforce. We can differentiate
instruction and offer timely and specific feedback. Observation is a method of
assessment that increases instructional agility and student investment, impacting
achievement in highly meaningful ways.
We observed the students of Grade 12 HUMMS from the class of Ms.
Princess Miesie Añata. Students in the classroom used a lot of previous knowledge
for the lesson. Each lesson was different and had different instructions, but the
material was the same. During the observation there were no behavior problems. It
was a well obtained class, and we are excited to know the result of the examination.
After we evaluate the test paper we noticed that there are only few students who
answered the identification test at the back of the paper. Also, we noticed that there
are no erasures that much, their papers are presentable.

All in all the students from Grade 12-Humms are all so cooperative and
understanding regarding of the pandemic they are so cheerful and answer the
prototype test with all of their knowledge and understanding.
