LESSON PROPER

Decorative art, any of those arts that are concerned with the design and decoration of objects that are chiefly prized
for their utility, rather than for their purely aesthetic qualities. Ceramics, glassware, basketry, jewelry, metalware, furniture,
textiles, clothing, and other such goods are the objects most commonly associated with the decorative arts. Many decorative
arts, such as basketry or pottery, are also commonly considered to be craft, but the definitions of both terms are arbitrary.
It should also be noted that the separation of decorative arts from art forms such as painting and sculpture is a modern
distinction.

HANDMADE JEWELRY: TYPES AND TECHNIQUES

Many consumers are moving towards a preference for handmade jewelry vs mass-produced jewelry. But what is
handmade jewelry and why is it becoming so popular? There are many different jewelry making techniques in use today
and we will explore the different types here.

What is Handmade Jewelry?

Handmade jewelry is made by an artist without the use of mass-manufacturing machines. There is no standard
"look" for handmade jewelry. It can range from simple hand-assembled pendants and bracelets to intricate designs that take
hours or days and skilled techniques to finish. What they all have in common though is that a jewelry artist makes each
individual piece using only their hands and simple tools.

Types of Handmade Jewelry

A. Assembled Jewelry Making

The simplest type of handmade jewelry is sometimes known as hand-

assembled jewelry. It's a great way to offer unique and personalized jewelry at an
affordable price. This usually involves creating necklaces, earrings, and bracelets from
pre-made charms, chain and jewelry findings. It is easy to learn simple assembly
techniques in just a few days, so it is the perfect way to get started with jewelry making.

B. Wire Wrapped Jewelry

Handmade wire wrapped jewelry is easy to spot: It uses a lot of wire! Most
jewelers use wire wrapping to create pendants or charms with stones and beads. At its
simplest, wire wrapped jewelry is a decorative frame embellished with other ornaments
that are attached with coils of wrapped wire. But some wire wrapping experts are able to
create very intricate and delicate designs with wire weaving techniques that are quite
labor-intensive. Wire wrapping takes time and practice to master.
Depending on the design, makers can use a few different gauges of wire. For
simple framing designs, they may choose to use a thicker gauge while the intricate woven
designs require thinner gauges. Makers will also need to take note of the wire's
temper for their project. For example, dead soft wire will be much easier to wrap many
times than a full hard wire.

C. Fabricated Jewelry
Handmade fabricated jewelry covers a wide range of jewelry styles from
traditional gemstone rings to wildly creative art jewelry. Fabricated jewelry uses
metalsmithing techniques and jewelry bench skills. Jewelers use a metal saw to cut out
the basic shape of the piece or to cut intricate details in the piece. Many jewelers use
soldering to attach components to each other. This can be as simple as attaching two
pieces or as complex as having a dozen solder joins. Fabrication takes time and
dedication to learn.
Once a jeweler knows a few basic concepts, they are able to manipulate the
metal in a wide variety of ways. As they gain knowledge and practice over the years, their
collections can become quite intricate and technically difficult. This is where a lot of the
gritty and grimy jeweler's hands come from!

D. Beaded Jewelry
Handmade beaded jewelry can be some of the simplest or most intricate jewelry
designs depending on which beads are used. Makers can use beads on a single strand
of stringing material to create bracelets and necklaces. Some of these beads may include
letters or numbers for personalization, fun shaped beads to show off interests, or a large
statement bead with smaller ones framing it. However, with quite a bit of practice and
some very tiny beads, makers can create larger and more intricate designs (pick up any
issue of Beadwork magazine to see examples).
The fun part about beads is that they can be incorporated into most types of
jewelry as accent pieces. A beaded necklace is a fun alternative to simple chain for
hanging your centerpiece creation.

E. Hand Stamped/Engraved Jewelry

This is one of the most popular types of handmade jewelry today. Hand
stamping allows a maker to easily create personalized custom jewelry for customers. It
only requires simple tools and techniques, so it's an easy craft to begin. Designs are
created by hammering a metal stamp impression onto a metal blank with a heavy
hammer. Most of these tools are readily available to hobbyists and professionals alike.
Since you can stamp most types of metals, you can choose how high of a price
point you wish to be in. Aluminum or copper blanks are some of the least expensive
options and available at many stores. Stamps are available in many different designs
including alphabet, animals, people, shapes, holiday themes and more.
Engraving handmade jewelry allows for more details in a design. However, it also
requires greater skills and/or special equipment. When a jeweler hand engraves a piece,
Hand Stamped Pendants they must take a sharpened engraving tool and cut a hand-drawn design. This technique
usually takes quite a bit of practice and time.
Laser engraving is another option - though this can come at quite a steep price for quality tools. The laser engraver
uses a beam of light reflected through mirrors to create a design on a piece of metal. Using a software program, the maker
can create or upload personalized designs to engrave.
This technique allows for high precision and accuracy in tiny details and surfaces. You can also create more pieces
with the same or similar designs in less time with the machine. But you need to be ready to invest in this sort of designing
as machines can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand.

F. Enameled
Handmade enameled jewelry is a great way to add pops of color to your metal
jewelry pieces. Enameling is basically fusing glass powder to the surface of metals to
create a permanent bond. There are different ways to add enamel to handmade jewelry.
The most popular technique today is torch-firing. This is considered a simpler, more
affordable enameling technique as you can use your soldering torch to heat up the
enamel on your metal.
Most enameling techniques require a kiln that heats the jewelry piece more gently
than a soldering torch would. Cloisonne is a popular enameling technique with a long
history. This technique uses wire to create little "compartments" to make a design with
the enamel. One of the most difficult techniques to master is called plique-a-jour. This

G. Resin Jewelry
.
Resin is a chemical compound that starts as a liquid and, when
mixed correctly, hardens to create a shiny, waterproof, hard substance.
Resin can be used to create striking jewelry, either on its own or with other
decorative items layered or suspended within it.
Making resin jewelry takes a bit of time and care, as the raw
materials can be toxic. But once you’ve mastered the basics of resin
jewelry making and how to use resin, you can get really creative with your
designs. Here’s how to make jewelry with resin, plus some beautiful pieces
for inspiration.

LESSON 3.1

Resin is a chemical compound made up of two parts: part A, which is the resin, and part B, which is the hardener.
Both parts are liquids, but they solidify when they’re mixed together. There are different types of resin (epoxy resin, polyester
resin, and UV resin) and the hardening process takes between 24 and 72 hours, depending on the type of resin. Once dry,
resin is non-toxic, hard, shiny, and waterproof.

Resin jewelry is any type of jewelry that is made with resin—although pendants and earrings are most popular.
When objects like flowers, glitter, beads, or gemstones are solidified within the resin, the process is called casting. Resin
can also be used with other jewelry materials, like wood or illustrations, to create a protective coating.

Here are a few beautiful examples of resin jewelry.

How to Make Resin Jewelry

Here, we’ll walk through how to make jewelry with resin using molds or casings that act somewhat like molds. If you
want to learn how to make resin jewelry without molds, you can use the resin pour technique.

METHOD 1 (USING EPOXY RESIN)

Step 1: Gather the Supplies You’ll Need to Make Resin Jewelry
Here are the supplies you’ll need:
 Resin part A and part B
 Safety gear: latex gloves, drop cloths, and apron (respirator and safety glasses are highly recommended)
 Spatula and plastic mixing spoons
 Measuring jug or cup (small ones are preferable for jewelry making)
 Jewelry bezels, molds, or casing
 Decorative items, like flowers, glitter, or shells
Different resins and brands are more or less suitable for different types of projects. For jewelry making and casting,
opt for a resin that has a thinner consistency, which helps prevent little air bubbles from appearing in your work.
Non-toxic resins are available, but whatever type you have, it’s important to work in a well-ventilated room and use
safety equipment to protect your skin, eyes, and lungs. Protect surfaces and floors with a drop cloth, and your clothes with
an apron.

Step 2: Prep Your Bezels/Molds and Decorative Items

Before starting to work with the resin, make sure you have your jewelry
items ready. Choose your bezels, molds, or casings, and have the flowers or other
items you’ll be casting on hand. You don’t want to be fumbling around with these
small items once you already have the resin mixed and drying. Different types of
casings will require different kinds of preparation to make them ready to receive the
liquid resin.
7

Step 3: Mix the Resin

To mix the resin correctly, follow the guidelines for your particular
brand and type of resin. The labels will tell you how much of part A and
part B to use. Take your time with this process as you don’t want to
introduce air bubbles, which can spoil the look of your jewelry.

Step 4: Pour the First Layer of Resin

Small pieces of jewelry will require two to three layers of resin.

Adding multiple thin layers helps prevent bubbles forming, and it also helps
when casting. The first layer acts as a kind of glue for sticking down
decorative items, like flowers, before you pour on the next layer.

Step 5: Add Your Decorative Item to the Resin

Now, add your flower or other decorative item to the first layer of
resin. Use a pin to adjust its position if you need to.

Step 6:

Wait several hours before mixing another small batch of resin and
adding a second layer. You don’t need to wait until the first layer is rock
hard, but it should be quite solidified.

Step 7: Remove from the Molds

Once the resin has cured (note: your brand of resin should tell you
the length of time required), go ahead and remove the pieces of resin
jewelry from the molds.
8

Step 8: Add Jewelry Fixtures

After the resin-making process is complete, assemble your jewelry.
This may require adding hooks for earrings or chains and clasps for
necklaces, as well as small tools and wire for creating holes in the resin or
casing.

Step 1: Use UV resin to create small objects or work in thin layers.

UV resin is a specialized form of epoxy resin that cures within minutes
under a UV lamp. Choose this type of resin if you’d like to make small objects,
like charms or pendants, and want to cure them quickly.
 You can make larger objects with UV resin, but you’ll need to work in very
thin layers to achieve an even cure.
 For instance, if you want to seal a large object with a layer of UV resin, you
can apply a thin layer with a brush, then cure it under a UV light. For a project
like this, you may need to use a large lamp or a handheld UV flashlight that
you can move around over the surface of the project.

Step 2: Select a UV lamp or flashlight with an output of at least 4 watts.

Look for a UV light source that’s strong enough to cure the type of resin
you’re using. 4 watts is typically enough, but check the directions on your
resin product for any specific UV light strength or wavelength requirements.
In most cases, UV lamps are stronger and will cure your piece faster than UV
flashlights.
 Some UV lamps come in the form of a hood or dome that you can place
over the object you need to cure. If you’re using this kind of lamp, make sure
it’s big enough to completely cover the object you’re trying to cure.

Step 3: Add a thin layer of resin to your object and cure it with the UV
lamp.
After you’ve applied a very thin layer of UV resin to your mold or over
the surface of your work, put the object under a UV lamp or flashlight. Aim to
make the first layer about .1 millimetres (0.0039 in) thick. Hold the light
source close to the resin, within around 1 inch (2.5 cm). Be careful not to
touch the surface of the resin with the light.
 Test the resin with a toothpick every 2-3 seconds to see how hard it is.
Depending on the size of the object, it might take around 2 minutes for each
layer to cure.
9

Step 4: Add new layers and cure them until you reach the desired
thickness.
Keep adding layers to your piece and curing them under the lamp. Once
your object is as thick as you want it to be, you can remove it from the mold—
you’re all done!
 Take care handling the object while it’s curing. Because of the chemical
reactions taking place in the resin, it can become very hot.

Step 5: Put your resin object in the sun if you don’t have a UV lamp.
If you don’t want to bother with a UV lamp, you can simply set your resin
object outside in the sun to cure. However, be aware that this could take
longer or be less effective if you live in an area with a low UV index or the
weather is overcast.
 Humidity can also prevent your resin from curing properly. If you want to
sun-cure your UV resin, choose a time when the weather will be sunny and
dry.
