In this Learner’s Packet, you will learn crafts that can be locally
assembled with local material guided by traditional techniques.
Are you ready? Let us start!

Southeast Asia is relatively known for its ancient aesthetic in conventional woven
fabric (Gittinger and Lefferts 1992). Its region comprises of the eleven countries such as
Brunei, Cambodia (Khmer), Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma),
East Timor, Laos, Philippines and Thailand. The textiles, clothing and designs are
remarkably similar in spite of the differences in language, culture, politics and religion.

Batik is an ancient art that has been passed on for thousands of years. It is an art
medium and methodology for creating design, usually on cloth, by applying wax to portions
of the material and then dyeing it, then removing the wax. This can be done to make
vibrant colors and incredible designs. It is said to be wide spread in Middle East, Africa,
Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Thailand, Philippines, India and more.

Philippine arts reflect the diverse cultural influences and traditions of its society since
it is inhabited by different ethnic groups. It is divided into three islands namely: Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao. Mindanao is home to different ethnic groups such as Lumads,
Maranao, Tausug, etc. Maranao culture is known for the exuberance and vitality of its art
forms. Their major art forms are carving, weaving and metalwork. Their artworks include
Sarimanok and Okir. Maranao arts and crafts are unrecognizable without mentioning the
“malong” an important part of their traditional clothing.

Machine-made printed cotton malongs made in Indonesia specifically for export to

Philippines, are commonly referred to as “batik” because the item is imported and also a
combination of different colors and patterns are used. Among traditional tribal peoples like
Maranao, malong is used in every life. The motif of their textile design is the okir.

Okir is an exclusive artistic cultural heritage of the Maranaos of Lanao, Philippines.

The okir motif is an art depicting the indigenous originality and skill of the Maranaos. It is a
fine art of figuring, painting, carving and sculpturing depicting the social and psychological
identity of Maranao Society. It refers to a whole repertoire of folk motifs which consists of

plant forms that figures prominently in their artwork from weaving to carving, to brass cast
pieces. Okir design serves as significant cultural symbols.

There are two traditions of Okir:

1. Okir-a-dato - the predominantly curvilinear male.
2. Okir-a-bai - the predominantly geometric female.

Fabric and Fabric Design

Thai silk is produced from cocoons of Thai silkworms. It is mainly produced in
Khorat which is the center of the silk industry in Thailand. Thai weavers from this region
raise caterpillars on a steady diet of mulberry leaves.
Today, Thai silk making is considered to be one of the finest arts in the world, a
product of a unique manufacturing process and bearing unique patterns and colors.
Silk weaving in Cambodia dates to as early as the first century since textiles were
used gor trading. Modern textiles Hve traces to motifs imitating clothing details on ancient
stone sculptures.
There are two main types of Cambodian weaving:
1. Ikat technique (Khmer term ; chongkiet) – to create patterns, weavers tie and dye
portions of weft yarn before weaving begins. Patterns are diverse and vary by region,
common motifs include lattice, stars and spots.

Jewelry has been part of mankind before history was written.
It began when time began and man first walked on earth. Of
course, the jewelry they wore in the olden days was not made like
what we make today. The ancient people wore jewelry made of
feathers, bones, shells and colored pebbles. Thailand is a major
global hub for colored gemstones. Thailand is the largest exporter
of silver jewelry and its many manufacturers offer a wide variety http://api.creativecommons.engi

Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions, originating before the Neolithic period,
with ceramic objects like the Gravettian culture Venus of Dolní Věstonice figurine
discovered in the Czech Republic dating back to 29,000–25,000 BC, and pottery vessels
that were discovered in Jiangxi, China.Pottery is the process and the product of forming
vessels and other objects with clay and other ceramic materials which are fired at high
temperatures to give them a hard, durable form. The processes are: preparing the
material, working with clay, drying, firing, cooling, decorating and glazing.

Pottery has three types:

1. Earthenware/Terracotta is formed when surface shales and clay are fired at low
temperature between 1840 F to 2030 F.
2. Stoneware is made from fine clay fired at higher temperature from 2130 °F to
2300°F.
3. Porcelainware is made from mixture of kaolin and feldspar and fired at very high
temperature

Learning Competencies

Creates crafts that can be locally assembled with local material

guided by local traditional techniques (e.g. batik, silk weaving,
etc) A8PR-lc-e-1

Activities

Activity 1: Pottery Making!

Directions. Create your own pot and design it according to your taste and
creativity. Follow the methods in pottery making stated below. Be guided by the
rubric in doing it.

Material:

• Clay/Mud
Method 1: Preparation
Knead the clay. Start with about 1/2 pound (.25 kilos) of clay. Slowly
warm it and work out the air bubbles by kneading it with your hands.
This will even out the clay’s consistency, eliminating lumps of soft
spots, and make it more pliable and easier to work with. https://api.creativecommons.engineering/v1/

Method 2: Slice your clay in half with a stiff wire, and check for
bubbles or gaps.
Method 3: Coiled Clay Pots and Create the bottom. Starting from
one end, wrap the coil in a spiral until the bottom is the size you have
in mind. https://encryptedtbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9Gc

AU

Method 3: Prepare the clay and start working. Score the outer 1/4
(.6 cm) inch of the bottom, and dampen with water or slurry (a thin mix
of clay and water). Do the same with the bottom of the coils as you
work. This will improve the clay bond and make your pot stronger. Lay
the first coil on top of the base, and wrap it around, building up the wall. https://api.creativecommons.engineering/v

Method 4: Strengthen your pot. To make your work durable, strengthen the clay bond by
smoothing down the inside of the pot, forcing down the clay from the upper coil into the joint
below it.

• To maintain the shape of your pot, support the outside of the pot as you smooth the
inside.
• You can smooth both inside and outside if you wish.

Method 5: Shape your pot as you make it. Create your contours
by adjusting the placement of the coils, and shaping the clay during
the smoothing and strengthening process.
Method 6: Finish your pot. Add any decoration or glazing as
desired, and depending on what kind of clay you are using you may
air-dry your pot, bake it, or fire it in a kiln. Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions on the correct method https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/e4/
