Class Outline:
Day 1: English Class: Mr. Mortarelli (50 minutes)
● Ice Breaker/Warm-up: (10-15 minutes)
○ What are some events of the play that could've happened differently that
would've resulted in a different ending?
○ Have students share with the class
● Review entirety of Romeo and Juliet (25 minutes)
○ Go through the show from beginning to end and think logically with students:
-What could've been handled differently?
-If it had been handled differently, how would the play's ending be altered
-If a character wasn't present in a scene, what altercations would occur?
-etc.
● Hand out final project assignment handout/review (remainder of class).
○ Review final project with students and explain how they will be recreating the
ending of Romeo and Juliet and making a physical art to display it in Mr.
August's class.
Day 1: Art Class: Ms. August (50 minutes)
● Warm-up (15 minutes).
○ Gallery Walk of Book Artwork and discussion/critique of the works.
● Presentation and Assignment (15 minutes).
○ Presentation on Books Arts and Artists, as well as examples of student work.
○ Pass Out of assignment on final book art project, including guidelines,
expectations, and rubrics.
○ Teacher explains how this connects to what they learned and worked on in
English class with Mr. Mortarelli.
● Brainstorming, Sketching, and Gathering Materials (15 minutes)
○ During this time students can ask any questions or concerns they have about
the assignment and begin planning how they are going to utilize their main
material, the physical copy of Romeo and Juliet, and their altered ending.
● Clean-up and Exit Ticket (5 minutes)
○ Students put away their sketches and materials and clean-up their areas, then
the exit ticket is a thumbs-up, thumbs-down assessment to see how the
students feel about the project and if they understand it.
● Homework: Continue working on sketches, bring one finalized sketch to class
tomorrow to begin/continue working on the final project.

Day 2: English Class and Art Class Combined (100 minutes)


● Warm-up (10 minutes)
○ Students gather in groups of 4-6 and discuss their alternate endings or changes
they made to Romeo and Juliet.
○ During this time Mr. M and Ms. A walk around and join the discussions and
review the sketches students had due for homework from Ms. A last class.
● Work Time (80 minutes)
○ During this time students will work on their book art project while Mr. M and
Ms. A walk around to answer any questions or concerns.
● Clean-up (5 minutes)
○ When five minutes are left in the class, Mr. M and Ms. A will guide students to
finish up their progress on their pieces for the day and clean up their work
tables/stations.
● Exit Ticket (5 minutes)
○ Students will create a list of the remainder of tasks they must complete for
their book art project to present tomorrow.
Day 3: English and Art Class Combined (100 minutes)
● Warm-up (10 minutes)
○ Presentation on critique, what to expect and what the rules/guidelines are.
○ Explanation of what students will be graded on during critique .
○ Thumbs-up, thumbs-down assessment to see if students have any questions.
● Work Time (30 minutes)
○ During this time students will finish their book arts project to prepare for
critique and presentation.
○ Mr. M and Ms. A will be walking around during this time to offer advice and
guidance.
● Critique and Presentation Time (55 minutes)
○ During this time students will present their artwork including an explanation of
their creative process with materials and techniques, as well as an explanation
of their alternate ending.
○ Students will be expected to respond to their peers with the compliment
sandwich technique, compliment-critique-compliment.
● Clean-up (5 minutes)
○ Students will clean up their areas and put their finished projects away, as well
as turn in their written summary of their changes to Romeo and Juliet to Mr.
M.
