Activity 1: Colonization and Literature (Essay and Discussion)

Philippine literature has a rich history that has developed alongside its variety.
Spanish colonial control, American rule, and contemporary rule were the three eras
or stages in which Philippine literature evolved.

The colonization that happens in the Philippines have good and bad influence in
our country. However, In my opinion, the colonization do more good than harm to
Philippine literature. Moreover, such colonial experiences have greatly influenced the
Philippine literary heritage making it very dynamic, evident even during the past
Colonial such that the fame of Philippine Literature. Colonization does good to make
our literature more significant and valuable until now. One of the most significant
effect of colonization was introduced during American Colonial Period, where new
literary forms such as free verse, the modern short story and critical essays was
introduced. American influence deeply entrenched with the firm establishments of
English as medium of instructions in a all schools. The Spanish Colonization also
introduced Religious literature such as komedya, sinakulo and Sarswela. The theater
also rose fame during spanish Colonization. Aside from religious poetry, there were
various kinds of prose narrative that introduced during that time. The contemporary
period also gives significant effect on Philippine Literature. The flowering of
Philippine Literature in the various languages continue especially the appearance of
publications. Filipino writers continue to write poetry, short story, novellas, essays
and many more whether this is socially committed, personal intention or not. The
colonial experiences of the Philippines have greatly influence the preservation of the
nation’s literary cultural heritage and built literature. There are many significant
effects of colonization in our country and it brings good and improvement of our
literature.

Whatever nationality you are it is always very important to study the literature of
your country. In order to better understand our literary history, we study literature.
Our rich intellectual history that our ancestors left for us can be traced through an
analysis of our literature. Then we may appreciate who we are more and be proud to
be Filipinos. We need to study literature because we cannot appreciate something
that we do not understand.Through such a research, we will become aware of our
literary limitations -- which are influenced by specific historical factor and we will be
able to take action to overcome them.
