Reading Robots Game

1. Select the cards which reinforce the phonetic skill or skills the students need
to practice.
2. Place the cards in the middle of the table. Add the cards which picture the
winning robot and the cards which instruct the player to draw more cards,
pass cards to a neighbor, etc. Mix the pile up.
3. The first player picks a card, spells the word and reads it. If the child can read
it, the card is kept in a pile in front of the student.
4. Play rotates to the next player who repeats the process.
5. If a player pulls a “Winner has the most…” card, all players are shown the card
and it is places in a pile of winner cards. At the end of the game, only the top
card is valid. The player then selects another card.
6. If a player draws an action card which gives specific directions, the directions
are followed during that turn. If any player does not have the number of cards
to follow directions, the action is discarded.
7. All word cards must be read by the child receiving them.
8. Winner is determined by the “last winner” is card that is drawn.

My students love this game! As an RtI teacher, I usually select the skill the students
are learning in the classroom and add cards from a skill that is not completely
mastered. Sometimes I mix cards from several areas that are not completely solid
yet. Another day I can mix long and short vowel sounds or soft and hard sounds so
students learn to look for the letters which change the sounds. Since all cards have
the phonetic skill printed on the ends, they are easy to sort and store until needed
again.

Ideas using Word Cards

1. Play the game Reading Robot as included in this packet.

2. Place the name tags on children. Call student by the sight word rather than name.
3. When playing a game have child read a flash card before making a move…Connect 4, Magic
Squares, etc.
4. Concentration
a. Make 2 copies. Put matching cards in a grid on the table…find the pairs
b. Lay in a grid and ask the students to match the vowel pattern
5. Place the cards around the room. Direct students to find a particular word.
6. Around the world
a. Students sit in a circle, and a starting person is selected.
b. The starting person stands behind the student next to him or her.
c. The teacher holds up a flash card.
d. The student to say the answer first moves on to challenge the next student.
e. If a sitting student says the answer first, the students switch places.
f. This process continues until at least one student makes it completely around the
circle.
7. War for 2 players
a. Deal cards to 2 players
b. Both students turn over their top cards at the same time. As quickly as possible,
they read the card they turned over
c. The first student who reads the card correctly puts both in his or her winning pile.
d. If a tie occurs, students should continue to turn their cards until someone wins the
pile.
e. Player with the most cards wins
8. Hangman
a. Choose one person to be the leader. That person will select one of the word cards.
b. Then another player or group of players will guess a letter.
31T 31T

i. If that letter is in the word(s) then write the letter in everywhere it would
appear,
ii. If the letter isn't in the word then add a body part to the gallows (head, body,
left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg).
c. The player or group of players will continue guessing letters until they can either
solve the word (or phrase) or all six body parts are on the gallows.
d. The leader wins if the full body is drawn. The guesser wins if they guess the word
before the person is drawn.
9. Guess the word…Select a word card. Tell students to write as you dictate each letter.
Winner is the first to guess the correct word.
10. Read a story and have child place the word in a box when you read a particular word or
phonetic sound. “-----goes in the box”
11. Place all the words in a box. Instruct students to roll a die and pick up that number of cards
to read. They can hold on to the correctly read cards and place other words back in the box.

12. Tape word to the back of each child. They walk around the room and. ask classmates yes or
no questions to determine word (Do I have a short a sound? Is there a final e?)
13. Post words where students can see them. Select one and start to write it without telling
students the chosen word. See who can guess the word first.
14. Place a stack of words in a pile and write words on Tic tack toe board. Students take turns
selecting a word, reading it and searching for it on the board. After locating the word, it is
crossed off the board. Winner is first to get all words crossed off..
15. Guess the word Place students in pairs Have students write words on a sheet of paper
already marked in a grid. Each student selects one word and records it at the bottom of the
paper. Students take turns asking yes and no questions to cross off words. (Are there 5
letter? Does it start with a w? etc.) Like the “Guess Who”
16. Place cards in a pile. Students will select a word, read it spell it using stamps, magnetic
letters, pipe cleaners, wiki sticks, play dough, sand, pudding or shaving cream.
17. Rainbow write Have student select a word from the pile and read it. Then the word will be
written in one color and traced with 3 other colors.
18. Bump…For pairs of students. Create sheet with about 12 boxes on it. Write numbers on
each square to correspond with a die. Give each child a short stack of words. Student rolls
the die, and reads a word and writes it in a spot. If they land on a spot that the other player
wrote on, they may erase and take the spot. Winner has most spaces when the sheet is all
filled in.
19. Place cards on floor. Throw koosh balls or paper airplane and have student read the word
nearest to the landing point.
20. Create sheet with columns for the number of letters in the words. Have about 10 rows on
the sheet. Pick a word from word wall or list of words on the board. Give a clue and have
students record a guess that fits that clue. Check to see if anyone has the word. Give clues
and have students record a guess until the word is guessed.
