This standard specifies the Part Marking requirements and the verification and validation requirements for
Data Matrix Codes.
Note:
Deviations from the requirements and verification and validation methods conform this standard are only
permitted in consultation with and formal approval by DAF Trucks NV.
Exception:
For engine: No labels allowed on internal components.
2.3.1 If the part will be (further) machined at DAF (make part), composition 1 is applicable:

The manufacturer uses position 19-39 for a batch number and keeps record of underlying batch data,
according to the quality plan. Position 19-39 may be partially filled. Filling always starts from position 19.
Depending on the restriction of symbol size in relation to the location on the part, the max. number of
positions might reduce from 39 to 31 or 25.
2.3.2 If the part will not be (further) machined at DAF (buy part), composition 2 is applicable.

The manufacturer uses position 13-39 for a unique identification number or batch number and keeps record
of underlying data, according to the Control Plan.
Traceability data requirements are clarified in paragraph 2.3.3. Position 13-39 may be partially filled. Filling
always starts from position 13.
Depending on the restriction of symbol size in relation to the location on the part, the max. number of

2.8 Readability
• For readability purposes human readable characters shall be used as well.
• The contents of the Data Matrix Code must be applied in human readable characters.
• The sections of the corresponding Data Matrix contents, must be separated by a at least a “space” or
not be applied in the extension of another section.
• The format of each character must comply with a 5x7 dot matrix (row x column) if dot peened.
• The character size and section position must be determined in consultation with DAF Trucks NV.
3 VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
4 VALIDATION REQUIREMENTS
The manufacturer must validate each code, which means establish the quality of each code. The code shall
be validated (and decoded) after a maximum of 2 shoots using an electronic reading (scanning) device.
4.2.2 Ovality
The ovality of the dot shall not exceed 20% of the cell size. No more than 2% of the total number of cells
may contain dots that are outside of these ranges.
5 INDICATION ON DRAWING
The area where the marking is to be applied on the product shall be framed on the drawing with a thin chain
line (line type 10 according to ISO 128-20). If required the area (or areas) can also be dimensioned.
This area is further marked with a flagnote which is connected with a thin leader line to the framed area.
The part-flagnote is referring to a note (see below) in the text field of the drawing (see DAF standard
TKB 00801-051).
