0. GENERAL :
The purpose of a bar code label is to facilitate the automatic exchange of data among all
members within a channel of distribution, for instance supplier, carrier, purchaser, and other
intermediaries. It is used in conjunction with electronic databases and / or electronic data
interchange (EDI) systems, the amount of data may be significantly reduced and may consists
of only one piece of data. A bar code label has Triple benefits – Standardisation, FIFO
implementation, Tracking of parts to specific vendors & batches. Common vendors across
locations will have to comply with this standard.

1. SCOPE :
This Tata Motors standard provides information on Bar Code System for outsourced parts
used on TML vehicles & aggregates.
Where the parts are too small to accommodate Bar Code / QR Code, it is suggested to use
* batch traceability numbering given in Annexure I.
For aggregates manufactured within Tata Motors, the bar coding is done as per the numbering
systems covered in pertinent aggregate numbering standards.

2. COMPLIANCE WITH NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL STD. :

Based on company practice. Refer TS 11842 for aggregates manufactured within Tata Motors.

3. MATERIAL :
White Poly Propylene (PP) material is used for Bar Code label
Gum should be of acrylic. Thickness of gum 40 micrometer (GSM 20)

4. SIZES :
There are two types of bar coding system.
a) One-dimensional bar code System (1D)
Label size : 100 X 30 mm with Thickness : 51 micrometer
* Barcode size (Height) : 7 mm
Details of barcode (Height) : 7 mm
Description of parts (Height) : 10 mm

b) Two-dimensional bar code System (2D)

Label size : 80 X 40 mm
Barcode size : 40 X 35 mm

The type of bar code to be used for a particular part depends on size of the part and is
decided by procuring agencies.
Note:- Any additional Bar Code Size not covered in the standard, to be agreed and confirmed
by Advance Quality & Engineering in consultation with Technical Services before finalisation.
Sticker Sizes mentioned in this document are for information and are not exclusive. However,
the concerned agencies to take conscious call depending on the availability of space on
individual part & scanning / reading of Barcode / QR code with available scanners without
compromising the requisite information and quality of Bar Code / QR Code.

5. NUMBERING SCHEME :
The Tata Motors 32 digit Bar Code numbering scheme will be numbered in 5 barrels,
consisting of Numbers & Alphabets.

a. Bar code/QR code sticker not to be applied on the functional surfaces (e.g. Bolt

clamping surfaces / hot surfaces. Belt running surfaces etc.)

specific part/connector/mounting hole/surface etc.

7. SUPPLIER BAR CODE SYSTEM
Where it is agreed to accept supplier’s own bar code to establish traceability, the bar code
should contain, to a minimum, reference of 12-digit TML part number, vendor code, month
and year of manufacture and serial number.
A suitable IT infrastructure and other support systems should be developed to effectively
comply with the requirements of traceability.
Note: This is not an exhaustive list and it will be updated based on the inputs received
from time to time.

ANNEXURE I

NUMBERING SCHEME OF QR CODE FOR BATCH TRACEABILITY

This 32 digit QR Code is applicable to those parts where implementation of the QR code is
not feasible for various reasons like geometrical limitations (spark plug, glow plug, valves
etc. parts too small, 8X8 Square space not available), for these parts, the QR code will be
applied on packaging box.
The numbering scheme will be numbered in 5 barrels, consisting of Numbers & Alphabets
as given below:
