I welcome you all to
this great celebration.
I wish to thank you all
for your contributions and all efforts made to make
this a success.
In a very special way, I want to thank the
government of the republic of Uganda led by His
Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Ministry
of Education and Sports led by the First Lady
cum Minister of Education and Ports, Hon. Janet
Kataha Museveni and the Commissioner HET for
the support given to this institution. It has enabled
us to serve diligently.
My sincere thanks also go to the staff, students,
parents and all stakeholders for your tremendous
contribution to the building of Kabale School of
Comprehensive Nursing, which is now becoming
Kabale College of Nursing and Midwifery. We thank
those who laid the foundation, those who added
bricks before us; the former Principles, staffs and
board members for their tremendous contribution.
It is that structure on which we have also been able
to make a contribution, and we thank God for that.
This being the only Government institution of
this kind in the entire Kigezi region, it has greatly
impacted lives of many people in the region and
beyond. The institution has produced many very
important people including ministers who have
passed through this institution.
As we celebrate the golden jubilee, we realize that
the school has made strides and grown from a
population of 120 students when it started to over
800 students currently. This implies that there are
a number of gaps especially in terms of facility/
infrastructure which must be bridged in order
for the school to function in a more efficient way.
Among those are the hostels to accommodate
students within the school premises. So, it was
deemed necessary to have a fundraising drive
to raise funds to put up the above structure. For
that matter, I appeal to you all our stakeholders;
principals, tutors, students, parents, political
leaders, the alumni and friends to support this
noble cause with whatever you can afford.
Like I mentioned earlier, the school is changing
its name from Kabale School of Comprehensive
Nursing to Kabale College of Nursing and
Midwifery. The reasons are clear; when the school
started, it was offering only certificates in both
midwifery and Nursing. We are now offering
diplomas, and in the near future we intend to start
bachelor programs.
The institution has fully embraced technology.

We have E-learning programs and our students
were able to continue with studies even during the
lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic.
We also have community programs whereby our
learners are sent in communities to help improve
the health and sanitation in those communities
where they are placed. On the other hand, the
students get opportunity to experience different
community setups thereby learning how to handle
clients from different backgrounds and social
setups.
Lastly, as we celebrate this golden jubilee of the
existence of our institution, it is time for us to
make a flashback and see how far we have come
(Ebenezer!), assess where we are and then strategize
our next course. The achievement of this cannot be
one person’s effort, we always need to join hands
because together we are a dynamite!

years is a long time for individual persons in East
Africa but not a such a long time for an Institution
like a nursing which can have a life span thousands
of years. Kabale College of Nursing and Midwifery
is celebrating 50 years with flares gathering together
Nurses and Midwives, Parents, Tutors, Clinical
instructors and alumni to blow their trumpet-
so-to-say and thank God for the fruitful years of
forming nurses as good members of the society. We
come together to celebrate with a spirit of a hostel
18 structure. How wonderful the attitude to this great
house of formation! This is a true spirit of a jubilee.
A nurse/midwife has three forms of formation to
aim at, The first form is spiritual, This is the basis
of all other forms, He or she touches the soul and
hearts of the patients, once spiritual formation is
missing in a part on its totality.
The nursing easily reverts to the status of a simple
server, school or even worse. It is not good to have
it neither hot nor cold, the motto is clear “To love
and Serve” The second form is human, this involves
discipline, cleanliness, good behavior, socialization
and other habits that make a nurse and full human
member of the society.

A nurse needs to be a good integral human being
before anything else an in human nurse is bad
news. The one is truly humanly formed, success in
life becomes just a matter of time. Then comes what
everyone wants to hear about nursing physical
healing and academic formation.
Often time life seem to be a mystery and indeed
it is for those who take deep reflection about it.an
old saying puts it that “un an examined life is not
worth living” Every successful life depends on
the power of the conscious mind of the person in
the question. In this case your conscious mind is
what you think. Herbert Harris in his book, “the
twelve laws of success” “Thoughts become feelings
(results) in accordance with the nature and feelings
of the thought while numerous people have stories
of success registered in nursing field, business,
politics, religion, many more of nurses have endless
stories”.
Belief in its self is self-inspiration Today we celebrate
the 50 years of existence of this great institution. We
are glorious and joyful celebrating the inspiration
of the founders of this institution. May you aspire
to inspire before you expire. Congratulation to you
all on this Golden Jubilee. May GOD continue to

I am delighted to write these few words on my
experience at Kabale School of Comprehensive
Nursing. Our great school will be celebrating
its Golden Jubilee. As we prepare for this grand
reunion, we would like to thank God for the men
and women who have passed and served Kabale
school of Comprehensive Nursing.
KSCN has nurtured men and women that have
impacted our society not only in Uganda but
across the world. It is befitting that the school that
was once among the best in the country should

Communication is
a unique but most
important gift that we
share as human beings.
Indeed, we communicate
to humans. We cannot develop and function as full human
beings without this gift. The more we communicate well,
the more we become and live together.
At the summit of communication is Jesus Christ, who
is able to share with us what He is and knows as God in
our human life and expressions as true God and true
human being as we read (John 1:14), Galatians 4:4,
Hebrews 1:1.
By communicating together as Christ taught us, we are
heading towards full humanity. Ephesians (4:1 – 8, 13 – 16)
Indeed we were baptised into the one body of Christ;
the priest, king and prophet as in 1 Cor. 12.
All this can only become a reality through
communication, especially sharing the Good News of
Christ with others.

 Innovations at KSCN
Covid 19 lock down had a number of lessons taught
to each one of us, especially salary earners more

that period that extended beyond June 2020, most
of organizations became too challenged to sustain
any worker on the pay roll in that majority had

As for the staff of this Institution, we encouraged
and supported each other to start any possible
innovations in order to survive. Presently, majority
of staff started some income generating activities
that boosted their wellbeing. From that experience,
members learnt not to rely on only salary even
when the economy is fully functional. Though
schools were closed, the school management
continued operating and achieved the following
during the covid-19 lock down:
Diary Project
This started six months after the first lack down,
as the management realized the school had a lot
of grass being wasted. Two heifers were purchased
.and are both expecting and doing well.
The project is intended to improve on both students
and staff diet.
Furthermore the school innovation is motivating
the staff, students and other stake holders to be
innovative in their respective homes

The water supply used to be unpredictable as well
as the bills were too high to be managed with the
limited resources.
We appreciate all the stakeholders that made it
possible to achieve this water source.

All students are accommodated in the School.
During the staggered reopening, all students
who were residing in the rented hostels were
accommodated inside the school. This also reduced
on the school expenses for the rented hostels. In
addition, it challenged the management to put in
place a fence to separate the males from female
residential areas.

 BEHIND THE SCENES
Whatever God does,
He does it so well,
for a good and well-
planned intention

years ago, a young
lady found herself in
this Kabale School
of Nursing and
Midwifery as an
enrolled midwifery
student. Little did she know that God had a bigger
plan for her. Through the Principal then, Mr. Elieza
Kaliramaguru(RIP), he observed and advised
that the student would have joined the course at
a higher level thus; at Registered level which was
only conducted at Mulago School of Nursing and
Midwifery. Excited though disturbed in heart, the
young girl asked what could be done to achieve
that. The principal then said it was rather late as
the student was already admitted in the school. He
however guided that the girl could re-apply for the
course in order to be reconsidered.
Following the guidance, the young lady requested
for a recommendation to go for the interviews
which were held in the middle of the year though
the course could start in November the same year.
Permission was granted and the girl attended the
interviews at Mbarara Regional Center. At first, she
was told to go back to Kabale and continue with
the course. She however persisted to plead with
the team until the last day when she was allowed
to apply for the change and was interviewed. With
the questions of the interviewers in mind she went
back to Kabale determined to study and complete
the course though at that lower level.
Two months later, the list came out and guess
what, the name of this young girl was on top of
the list admitted to Mulago School of Nursing and
Midwifery for Registered Midwifery Course. Good
enough, the brother of the girl had visited her and
the principal allowed them to go home to wait for
the course to start.
After three years, the girl graduated as a Registered
Midwife, posted to Mulago National Referral
Hospital. Two years later, the midwife was granted
further training and later became a midwifery tutor
and was transferred from the hospital to the school
from which she was able to pursue her bachelor’s
degree in Nursing among others. By God’s grace,
the tutor has taught many colleagues to different
levels of the profession.
Behind the scenes, God had a bigger mission in
that the one once to be an alumni turned up to be
the 5th Principal of the school. The same grace has 37
made the person to lead the organization of the
Golden Jubilee celebrations and fundraise towards
achieving a Golden Jubilee Structure.
As scripture in Phil. 1:6 states, ‘the one who started
a good work in me will bring it to successful
completion’. For that reason, whenever God takes
you through an experience, there is a reason. Never
take it for granted but trust and wait for God to act.
Praise be to God.

 INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE
As we learn and get to know the importance of strategic
vision and effective leadership, we have ignored the critical
link between vision and leaders’ ability to powerfully
communicate its essence/meaning.
 Later, leaders will not only have to be effective strategists
but speakers whose words are primarily intended to
impress or persuade. The era of managing by dictate is
ending and is being replaced by an era of managing by
inspiration.
Foremost among the new leadership skills demanded of
this era will be the ability to craft and articulate a message
that is highly motivational.
What do I mean, as I share my experience, look at the
message in it but yourself perspective?
I had my primary education to secondary high school in
several school. At this level, I was in my own life where I
had no direction and no vision at all.
At the end of Senior six, I ended up not doing well due to
lack of vision, going thru several schools (four schools in
A ‘Level with MEG) and because my father had high hopes
in me for becoming an engineer, he told me to repeat S.6.
At this level, I started gaining my vision indirectly.
My mother was a teacher and at the same time a TBA and
her TBS practice inspired me. Whenever I was at home
and she happened to get a mother in labour, they would go
in the room and lock it to conduct a delivery. I would go
in a hole of the door lock and pipe and look at how a baby
comes our and how they cry and this I kept it at heart and
said at one time, I will copy and do what my mother does.
So, when dad told me to repeat, I told him its OK.
However, when he left home for work because he was a
businessman and he used to do his business outside the
country, I was adverts in the newspapers for interviews
for Nurses and Midwives. I asked our neighbor what they
ment and she explained and I told her to help me apply.
I went with my application to Mulago School of Nursing
where I did interviews. When dad came, I told him that,
Dad, me I went and did interviews from Mulago hospital
and did interviews for Nurse because by that time I
couldn’t differentiate between a Nurse and a Midwife. My
Dad was like how could you waste my money for all the
two years and your time for A’ Level. But because he loved
us girls and we knew he would give us most of the things
we asked, I told him that, dad, I know what I want but
not what you want. He said fine, let me see what to do.
When results came, they had posted me in Kabale school
of nursing and midwifery. At this time, I felt my dream
would come true
So, I joined Nursing like that. When I reached Kabale, we
were given a grace period of two months to get used to the
environment but in this period, I go friends and started a
new capture. I finished my enrollment in May 2001.
Throughout my education journey, I was a leader in
different displines. Despite going through several schools,
I was a leader, a sports lady, netballer, Musician (I would
dance every type of dance, traditional better than even
the owners and very good at turning all instruments and
playing them.) This motivated people to choose me as
their leader and above all, I was a social lady. In KSNM,
I was a health prefect in my first year and later a head
girl. After my enrollment, I worked in privates for a few
months and in January 2002, I joined Mbarara District
Local Government. My first deployment was at a facility
and I was the first midwife in this community. I would look
at an average of 90 mothers per month but I would have
no delivery for all the first 7 months because they would
look at me as a young girl who doesn’t know anything.
It was one night at 1:00AM, when they brought a young
girl who got teenage pregnancy and failed to succeed with
delivery and was distressed. I resuscitated her, monitored
labour and delivered the mother successfully. This did
not demotivate the community and they released that
its not about the age but the skill which also motivated
me to serve with passion. The next month, I delivered 96
mothers and going forward I was among Midwives who
delivered many mothers in the district. I worked for only
two years and asked for a study leave which was granted to
me with no dought as a motivational factor for my service.
I then went for a diploma in midwifery at Rubaga Hospital
training schools where I finished in 2005. During my first

deployment, the community enjoyed my service including
my supervisors. When I returned, I was deployed at the
district health officer’s office to act as a head of Nurses and
Midwives in the district. This motivated me and inspired
me to think of further studies to maintain the status qoa.
By the end of two years, I even didn’t have money for the
further studies but in my heart, I was like, you go God,
knows. I went for my degree in Nursing which I attained
in 2010. In 2016, I saw an advert for Kayunga DLG which
I applied and with God’s Mercy, I went through and am
now the ADHO-MCH in Kayunga. While in Kayunga, I
went for MPH which I know in a few years to come, the
MPH will also push me somewhere by God’s Mercy.
What does this mean?
Never fear anything that your heart tells you. This is an
internal inspiration in you. Try out and see the outcome.
Don’t wait for money to accumulate so as to get what you
want; money will never accumulate.
Medical is a calling and when you have a passion for
serving, God helps you achieve your vision. Its by people’s
tough that makes you succeed or fail in your journey.
Have values that drive you and you will attain what you
want and sky will be the limit

 TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP
Having trouble with falling asleep or waking up
during the night is a common a problem with
which a lot of people struggle with. Especially
during stressful times or a full schedule it can be
hard to get some rest time over the night.
These 6 tips may help you to reduce your stress-
level and your anxiety for a better good night sleep.
Early Bird
Going to bed when the new day has already begun
is not a good idea if you want better sleep. Try to
stick to a routine and go to bed earlier to yourself
more time to fall asleep and a longer bedtime.
The next morning you will realize that it is easier
for you to get out of bed and that you are more
energized and ready for the day.
Bye bye social media
Yes, social media can be great to pass time and it
seems to be very relaxing, especially during the
evening. But as we all know; social media can be
mentally very stressful and draining and eventually

asleep. What you may not realize is that it takes a
lot of time to process all the information- because
just thinking too much about things can affect your
sleep behavior.
No screen times
In addition to that, try to reduce your screen time
not only on your phone, but also your computer,
tablet or whatever you have. Next to making you
unnecessarily nervous, having a lot of screen time
can affect your sleep quality.

Make sure to feel comfortable in your own
bedroom. Is there something which could distract
you? Something that makes you anxious or
uncomfortable? If so, store these things, at least
overnight, in a box or container.
Other factors that could guide you to better sleep

in the moment for a minute. Meditating not only
helps you to learn more about yourself but also
about appreciating the small the small things in life
and where you are right now.
