This test is used as an aid in the diagnosis of latent & active tuberculosis but does not distinguish between the two forms of the disease. A positive
result supports the diagnosis of tuberculosis; however infection by other Mycobacteria like M. kansasii, M. szulgai & M. marinum can also show
positivity. A complete medical & diagnostic evaluation is necessary to confirm / exclude tubercular infection. Magnitude of measured Gamma
Interferon cannot be correlated with stage or degree of infection, level of immune responsiveness or likelihood of progression to active
disease. False negative results may be obtained if sample is taken prior to development of immune response. CDC recommends repeat test after
8 - 10 weeks in case of high suspicion of tuberculosis. Immunocompromised patients can also show false negativity.
