How to deal with the

“SPEAKING TEST”

Miss.Nendy
rn, let’s discuss from the ADFELPS’.
Phase 1
The proctor may ask you with several questions:

1. How you are.

2. How your feeling is rn.
3. some ideas about your feeling regarding the course or class or the test.
4. Sometimes, the proctor will just tell you what you are going to have in
this session.

- The idea is to make you at ease and somehow to settle the proctor’s
mood.
• P : Hi, How are you feeling?
• S : Great, never been better. How about you, Sir/Ma’am?
• P : Yeah, today’s awesome. Okay, so what do you think about the
course so far?
• S : Well, everything runs well. I get friends, new experience,
knowledge, etc.
• P : Okay. Good. So today, you’re gonna have the speaking test. There
will be 5 phases. First (syalallalalalal till she finishes telling what the
test looks like)
• S : Okay got it, Ma’am.
• P : Okay, let’s start.
Phase 2 (Providing basic info and responding to simple
questions)
The Proctor may ask you to introduce yourself.

Next, when he/she finds something interesting about what you are saying,
he/she may ask deeper questions, yet simple, about your previous
statement.

The idea is like you are having a lil’ dialog with your old friend, to talk things
about you.

So MAKE SURE you really are good at describing or telling about yourself!
• P : Okay, first of all, tell me about yourself!
• S : Okay Ma’am. I am Nendy Koesey. You can call me Nendy for
short. I was born in Jakarta, on January 1st 1999. I am going to be
23 this year. I am fond of cooking and singing. They both are my
typical of releasing stress activities to me.
• P : Oh really? What food do you like to cook.
• S : Well, I actually are into the traditional food one. So, I am good
at making let’s say Rendang, Soup, Pindang, you name it!
• P : I see, what about your family?
• S : Well, I’m coming from the family of four. Lucky me, I am the
first. My Dad works as a farmer and my Mom is a teacher. My
second sister works at University of Indonesia, a lecturer there.
• P : What subject does she teach?
• S: It’s Economic.
• You can end your slight introduction by saying.

- I think that’s all for now on.

- I think that’s all I want to tell you.
Phase 3 (describing, explaining, comparing a familiar
topic with reference to both present and past)
• The proctor may bring or take a topic from your introduction or
he/she may come up with some other topic.

• The most common one:

P: Okay, you say you are the first in your family and you have three
other siblings.
S : Yes, I do.
P: Tell me, if your parents have different ideas of raising you with your
lil brother.
• S : well, of course it is very different indeed. When I was a
kid, my parent were not as lucky as they are now. They had
to work very hard to settle and I remembered that I had to
walk to my Elementary school since we didn’t have any bike,
motorcycle or car. I used to not join many courses because
the money was just for our daily needs. From that, I believe
they shaped me into a person I am now. On the contrary, My
Brother was born when My parents are now good and settle.
He doesn’t have to walk to school, even he has his own bike.
another possibilities.
P: You tell me that you were born in Jakarta. Tell me if Jakarta now is
still the same as it was back then.

S: Well, Jakarta is surely different now. The biggest difference is about

the traffic. I used to ride my bike for only 15 minutes to take a 9km trip,
but now it takes like almost 45 minutes.

The air is also another thing. Jakarta’s air used to be very clean. Now, I
have to go to Bogor when I want to have fresh air.
Phase 4 (role play for information gathering)

• In this phase, the proctor and you will have a role play in which you
are going to ask several information.
• Please, use the formal form of questions by using, Please, Could, and
embedded questions.
• Here are some typical topics of the role play.
• You are a customer who is talking to a travel agent.
• You are gonna finda out things regarding your plan to Australia.

Kriiing!!!

S: Hello, Good morning. Is this Nancy’s travel?

P: Yes, G’morning. How can I help you?
S: Hi, I wonder if you could tell me the nearest flight to Australia.
P: Okay, lemme check first. So, we have one flight.
S: Okay, what time is it?
P: around 5 am.
S: Alright, can you tell me how much the ticket costs?
• P : Is it a one way trip or a round trip?
• S : A round trip, please.
• P: Okay, it’s $250.
• S : I see. I wonder if there is a discount or not since I am also a
member in Nancy’s travel.
• P: Oh, I’m so sorry Sir. There isn’t such promo these days.
• S: Okay it’s fine. So, I’ll book one round trip ticket to Australia. Tell me
where I should transfer the money!
• P : Okay, may I have your phone number, please. I’ll send the e-billing
on your Whatsapp.
• S: It’s 0812 9559 9559.
• P : Is there anything else you want me to tell?
• S: Nope, I think that’s all for now. If there’s a question, I’ll text you.
Thank you for your help. Good morning.
• Note that in this Phase, you should speak naturally.
• Do not over do and be very active to ask questions.
