THINKING ABOUT THE POEM (page-67)

1.Which country or countries do you think “the Northland” refers to?

It is a country somewhere in the north of the earth. It is a cold country where people move on sledges
drawn by reindeers. In this land of snow and ice, days are short and nights are long. Children wear heavy
fur clothes to keep themselves warm.

2.What did Saint Peter ask the old lady for? What was the lady’s reaction?

Saint Peter asked the woman for a piece of cake from her store of cakes. The woman made a very small
piece of cake to give it to the hungry Saint Peter but it seemed too large to her to be given away. She
went on making it still smaller and smaller. At last she did not give him anything to eat.

3.How did he punish her?

He punished her by transforming her into a woodpecker. Like a woodpecker, she would have to bore for
a long time to get scanty food.

4.How does a woodpecker get her food?

The woodpecker bores the hard and dry barks of the trees to get its food.

5.Do you think that the old lady would have been so ungenerous if she had known who Saint Peter really
was? What would have she done?

No, she would not have behaved in such a selfish and greedy way .Instead, she would have given him a
large piece of cake to make him happy.

6.Is this a true story? Which part of this poem do you feel is the most important?

No. It is a legend. The main purpose of the story is to teach the young minds about the value of
generosity and charity without any discrimination. ( stanza 3)

7. What is a legend? Why is this poem called a legend?

A legend is an old traditional story , usually with a moral teaching. The poet says that she does not
believe this tale to be true. This poem is called a legend because it teaches the importance of generosity
and charity to all fellow beings.

8. Write the story of ‘A Legend of Northland “in about ten sentences.
