Sample Questions and Answers
1. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.9.1)

16 x  3
Find the minimum value of k for the rational expression to be defined for all
x  11x  12
2

values x > k.

Sample question answer:

The denominator of the expression factors to (x  12)(x + 1), and is equal to 0 when x = 12
and when x = –1. Therefore, the expression is defined for all real values of x except when x
= 12 and when x = –1. This concludes that the expression would be defined over any
interval not containing any of these two values of x. Therefore, the minimum value of k is
12.

If f(x) = 9x  5, find the function that is equal to f(–5x).

Sample question answer:

f(–5x) = 9(–5x) – 5 = 45x – 5

3. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.13.2)

If f(x) = 5ax2 + 3bx, where a and b are constants, and f(–5) = 60, find the value of 50a  6b.

Sample question answer:

Substituting 5 for x and 60 for y in the given function and simplifying yields, 125a – 15b =
60
or 5(25a – 3b) = 60. Dividing the last equation by 5 and multiplying by 2 gives, 50a – 6b =
24.
Therefore, the value of 50a  6b is 24.

4. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.13.5)

If f and g are functions such that f(3) = –5, f(7) = –1, g(4) = 7, and g (–5) = 6, find the value
of f(g(4)) + g(f(3)).

Sample question answer:

f(g(4)) + g(f(3)) = f(7) + g(5) = 1 + 6 = 5

Date 14-09-20 | Level M | 4

5. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.12.1)

Find the range of the graph of the equation f(x) = |2x  5|  4.

Sample question answer:

The term |2x  5| is always non-negative and has a minimum value of 0.
Therefore, its minimum value is 0, yielding f(x) = –4.
Therefore, the range of the graph of the equation is all real y  4.

6. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.12.3)

The graph of the parabola y = 5x2  ax + b has its vertex at (3, 2). Find the values of a and b.

Sample question answer:

a
The x-coordinate of the vertex is = 3, from which a = 30. Using this value for a, the
10
equation is rewritten as y = 5x2  30x + b. Since the vertex (3, 2) lies on the graph of the
function, we have
2 = 5(9) – 30(3) + b, yielding b = 47.

7. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.1.6)

When a body falls freely under its own weight, its height after t seconds is given in feet by
the equation h = –16t2 + k, where k is the initial height of the body. If a rock falls freely
from a height of 200 feet, what would be its height, in feet, after 3 seconds?

Sample question answer:

If a rock falls freely from a height of 200 feet, then when t = 0, h = 200.
Substituting in the given equation, we get k = 200. Therefore, its height after t seconds is
given in feet by the equation h = –16t2 + 200.
Substituting t = 3 in the given equation, we get h = 16 × 32 + 200 = 56 feet.

8. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.12.10)

A ball was thrown upwards from a height of 4 meters. It reached a maximum altitude of 6
meters above the ground after 3 seconds, and then fell back towards the ground. Express
the altitude h of the ball from the ground as a quadratic function in t, the time since it was
thrown.

Date 14-09-20 | Level M | 5

Sample question answer:
The altitude of the ball from the ground after t seconds since it was thrown may be
expressed as
h = –a(t – b)2 + k.
If the ball reached a maximum altitude of 6 meters above the ground after 3 seconds, then
b = 3 and k = 6. Therefore, h = –a(t – 3)2 + 6.
If a ball was thrown upwards from a height of 4 meters, then when t = 0, h = 4.
2
Substituting in the equation, we get 4 = –9a + 6, yielding a = .
9
Therefore, the altitude of the ball from the ground after t seconds since it was thrown is
2
given by h = – (t – 3)2 + 6.

The graph of the equation y = x2 – 18x + 81 in the xy-plane is a parabola. Find its vertex by
writing the equation in an equivalent form.

Sample question answer:

The vertex form of a quadratic equation is y = a(x – h)2 + k, which reveals the coordinates
of the vertex of the parabola to be (h, k). This form may be obtained by completing the
square of the given equation.
y = x2 – 18x + 81 = (x  9)2
Therefore, the vertex of the parabola is (9, 0).

10. Reference: ACE the SAT (AM.2.3)

The equations y = (x + 4)2 – 81, y = x2 + 8x – 65, and y = (x + 13)(x  5) represent the same
parabola in the xy-plane. Find the x-intercepts and the y-intercept of this parabola

Sample question answer:

The x-intercepts may be determined by setting y = 0 and using the factored form of the
equation.
Applying this concept to the third equation which displays the factored form, when y = 0,
we get x + 13 = 0 or x – 5 = 0, yielding the x-intercepts at x = 13 and x = 5.
The y-intercept is determined by substituting x = 0 which gives y = 65 as determined by
the constant term in the second equation.
