 The Story of Kartono & Erica’

It was a story of two people who loved each other deeply. Disparity between them was not able
to separate their passion to love each other. Kartono & Erica are the name of them. As the
generation of colonizer of Netherlands, Erica was not allowed to have a special relationship with
Kartono who was born as Indonesian. Intrigue, conflict, and sacrifice were the parts of this story
which made it complicated. Did their story will be ended with happiness? Let us see then.
Scene 1 (At Kartono’s house)
There were Kartono with his family who were doing their daily activities. Kartini is waiting
Kartono to accompany her. They planned to watch a small theater at fair.
Waginem : Where is Kartono my dear?

Kartini : He is still taking wood in the forest mom.

(Then Kartono come suddenly bringing wood that has gathered )

Kartini : Ah mom… here he is.
Kartono : What sis?

Kartini : There was a girl looking for you here (mocking at Kartono)

Kartono : Oh… please! Just prepare everything immediately or we will be late sis.

Kartini : Hahaha… OK! (laughing at Kartono)

Waginem : Do not bother your brother Tini (smiling at Kartini)

Kartini : Hahaha… He is too shy to tell the truth mom (glancing at Kartono then

laughing)

Kartono : Oh… Come on! We do not have much time to the fair sis!

Kartini : Somebody is going to be angry now (going to the inside)

(Waginem walk then sit beside her son)

Waginem : Ah… My little boy is growing older now.

Kartono : I do not have girlfriend mom.

Waginem : I did not said that kartono (laughing)

Kartono : Then what?

Waginem : Is there any girl that is touched your heart?

Kartono : Oh… Mom! Please!

Waginem : You are just like your father kartono (smiling)

Scene 2 (At the fair)

Kartono and his brother are walking around then watching a drama. When they are looking a
place to have a better look, Erica and her sisters are walking too near them. Unfortunately, one of
Erica’s sisters is almost falling down because her body touched Kartini. Erica’s sister and Kartini
are having a quarrel. But, still, it is the moment where Kartono and Erica meet.

Madonna : Blimey! Do not you see me villager?!

Kartini : Oh… Please… Forgive me… It must be my mistake…

Madonna : You are such a lunatic slave!

Kartini : What?! What did you say huh?!

Madonna : Slave! You… Indonesian… Looked like a beggar with an old rumpled

dress… How pity you are! You must be going to pick a pocket here beggar!

Erica : Please stop! That is too rude sis! (grabbing her sister’s hand)

Veronica : It is not necessary sis (helping Erica to grab Madonna’s hand)

Kartini : Do you think that I am afraid with you?! No!

Kartono : Please do not getting mad my sister… Just let her go (whispering her sister)

Madonna : Let us see then beggar!

Kartini : I am waiting it…White race!

Veronica : It is better to leave this place sis. Undoubtedly, it is not good for you.

Kartini : Yeah… It is better to not live here too! Kartono, I need some fresh air now.
(Veronica brings Madonna to somewhere and Kartini also leave that place)

Erica : I apologize for my uncontrolled act of my sister. She has bad tempered.

Kartono : Yeah… Please forgive my sister too.

Erica : It is okay.

Scene 3 (At the farm)

After that incident, life goes as usual. There is nothing to be worried. Kartono and his sister
spend their life working in the farm. They have been working there since their father died. They
must work there until the debt paid. As the owner, Mr. Van Zuckerberg is hardly counted every
cent that earned by the two siblings. One day, an unpredictable moment is surprisingly happened.

Kartono : It is a hot day, is not it?

Kartini : Yes it is, but we must finish our work.

Kartono : I know it. Mr. Van Zuckerberg always counts every sweat he takes.

Kartini : Oh… That bloody Dutchwoman again, what does she wants exactly huh?

Kartono : Oh… Please… It is not the right time sis.

Madonna walks around the farm and sees the workers do their works. A familiar face appears at
her sight. Then, she comes with mad face.

Madonna : You! What are you doing here?!

Kartini : I am working here. Is there something wrong?

Madonna : No!

Kartini : Well, there is nothing to be discussed. Excuse me, I want to take a rest.

(Kartono and Kartini leave her guest, Madonna)

Madonna : You…! You…! Arrgghh… How Annoying you are! You will get your
consequences because the honourable Mr. Van Zuckerberg, your boss, is my

father. You will be fired soon!

Kartini : I think that is not a good choice for your father.

In the other place, Kartono sits to have a rest and enjoy his meal. Then a girl comes with her
beautiful face. He feels shocked then stood hurriedly.

Kartono : Madam… (smiling then nodding his head)

Erica : I thought that I have seen you but I forget it.

Kartono : Urmm… Yes madam, There was an accident between our sisters at fair.

Erica : Ya..Ya… I remember that. Well, my name is Erica. (Offering her hand)

Kartono : Please forgive me madam, my hand is dirty.

Erica : Oh… Please… It is okay for me… Once again, my name is Erica, please do

not call me madam.

Kartono : Yes, my name is Kartono.

Erica : Are you working here?

Kartono : Yes, I am working here with my sister too.

Erica : OK… Well, I have to go another place, see you later.

Kartono : Yes Ms. Erica. Have a nice day.

Scene 4 (At the Kartono’s house )

At the Kartono’s house, his sister, Kartini, makes a little bit conversation with Kartono and her
mother. They are discussing about Mr. Van Zuckerberg family’s and the girl who often visits
Kartono.

Kartini : I cannot believe it. That mad dutchwoman is Mr. Van Zuckerberg’s daughter.
Kartono : Yes, but Erica is not like them.

Kartini : What? Erica? Who is she?

Kartono : The sister of girl who had accident with you. The one who apologize for her

sister uncontrolled act.

Kartini : Ah… Maybe that is just her sweet words. It is just like her forefathers

Behavior at the first, the cursed tribe who claims our land!

Waginem : What happened to all of you my dear?

Kartono : Nothing mom. There is nothing to be worried.

Kartini : Nothing you said? Are you insane?!

Kartono : I know that, but, it would be wiser if you ignore her.

Kartini : You saw it in front of your face how cruel she was yesterday and you just

stayed calm like it? She is just like her father, the murderer Van Zuckerberg!

Waginem : Wait…! Have you ever met his daughter?

Kartini : Yes, I have it, and maybe all of his daughters will be like him too.

Kartono : Oh… come on sis… Erica will not be like that.

Kartini : Ah… It makes nonsense! All of them are same!

(Kartini is going to the outside and leaving her mother and brother)

Waginem : Please do not be angry with her. You must be knew her well dear.

Kartono : Yes mom, but Erica is not like her father and sister. She is kind.

Waginem : iyo kartono , not all of them are cruel, but, still, do not make a relationship with

Dutchwoman, it is better to you dear.

Kartono : I know it mom, but she is different. She is friendly with the workers.

Waginem : I know my dear. A Dutchwoman must be beautiful.

Kartono : It is not about that mom.

Waginem : Yes honey, I understand it. Do you see the girl who always looking for you?

Kartono : Sumi?

Waginem : I think she is kind my dear. I can see it from her eyes.

Scene 5 (At the Erica’s house )

Madonna feels so mad about Kartini. She is so angry because Kartini is not an ordinary woman
like other workers. She has no fear and brave. She knows well if that is a bad thing that can
threaten her glorious position as colonizer. She tells it with her family.

Mr. Berg : I heard that you have met Kartini at fair.

Madonna : Yes papa. I hate her so much. She was too dangerous for us. I can feel that.

Erica : But that was not her mistake Madonna. (coming to the inside with Veronica)

Madonna : Why do you care about them? Do you like her brother? I saw you talked with

him at that time.

Erica : It cannot be. You were too rude at that time and too odd. I think he is a polite

man. That is all. And why do not you show them a good behavior as young Dutchwoman lady
huh?!

Mr. Berg : Please stop! It is not necessary for all of you. All of them are just our slave.

Uneducated people who work at our farm. You can sell them when you not

(All of the Mr. Van Zuckerberg daughter went back to their own room. In Erica room, there is a
little bit conversation between Erica and her sister Veronica)

Veronica : Do you like him Erica?

Erica : I do not even know it Veronica. Why do you asking that?

Veronica : I can see that.

Erica : See what?

Veronica : Your eyes. I knew you well my sister. Do you like him?

Erica : I just feel that he is a good man since we have first met. He is calm, not much

talking, and has a bravery in his eyes.

Veronica : I cannot say anything. But you must be know the consequence that will you

get.

Erica : As a Dutchwoman, I know it.

Scene 6 (At the farm )

The moon changes the sun. Dry is going to be rainy. The eggs of birds are hatched and soon they
will learn to fly. Erica shows how deep her love and Kartono responds it by his attention. No one
knows until an unpredictable catastrophe comes.

Erica : Are you tired Kartono?

Kartono : Yes, of course. There are many things that I do today.

Erica : Well, I bring you some cake. Is it your favorite?

Kartono : How do you know it? It is the best food I have ever met Erica.

Erica : A woman who really loves her man always knows what her man like.

Kartono : That is great. Thank you. Do not you afraid if people know about us?

Erica : What for?

Kartono : Your father, Mr. Van Zuckerberg, he must be angry if know it.
Erica : Yeah, I know that but… emmm… I do not like his way at all. Everyone has

rights to be free and treated kindly as other even they are workers.

Kartono : Yeah, I know that you are different since we have first met. That is why I

feel so calm when I meet you Erica.

Erica : That is what I feel too Kartono. Thank you.

Erica : You must be like this… Open your mouth… Aaaa… Aaaa…

(When they are laughing, the girl who loves Kartono so much comes)

Sumi : Oh no!

Kartono : Sumi!

Sumi : I… I just want to give you some foods but I think you have it.

Kartono : Please wait here Erica. I have something to do.

Erica : Oh yes… It is okay. I understand it.

(Kartono comes approached Sumi)

Kartono : What are you doing here?

Sumi : I just want to give you this. You must be hungry but I know if this is not

necessary anymore.

Kartono : Yeah… I am hungry but you need not to do this.

Sumi : Why? Because that girl? That beautiful Dutchwoman? Is it a reason why you

do not love me? Do not you know how hurt it for me? It hurts.

Kartono : Sumi… Listen to me… You must not be like this.

Sumi : Is it your answer?

Kartono : Sumi…

Sumi : Yes…

Kartono : Please forgive me. I do not love you. I cannot get that feeling.

Sumi : Is it because her?

(Sumi leave them and Kartono go back approached Erica)

Erica : Who is she?

Kartono : Sumi, the girl that I have told you before.

Erica : Oh… She is…

Kartono : What is wrong with you?

Erica : Nothing… I am okay… Emm… Do you love her?

Kartono : I do not love her.

Erica : You are the only one in my mind. I have never felt this way before. Will you

promise me to keep this?

Kartono : Yes I will and will you promise me one thing?

Erica : What is that?

Kartono : Please keep this too. It is the most precious thing that I have in my life. You

deserve it Erica. You are the only one I love.

Erica : Will you take me far away one day?

Kartono : Yes I will.

Scene 7 (The worst moment )

At the house, Mr. Van Zuckerberg and his wife Mrs. Elizabeth is looked so quiet but it is not
same like what is in their head. They are so disappointed with Erica’s special relationship with
Kartono.

Elizabeth : I cannot believe it. My daughter loves a filthy slave. How embarrassing it is.

Mr. Berg : I have warned her before but she ignored it.

Elizabeth : Why? Why must that slave?

Mr. Berg : I do not even know. That bloody family is never stopped make trouble for us.

Elizabeth : I think you should kill all of them.

Mr. Berg : I have planned for it.

(Erica comes inside)

Mr. Berg : Erica! Come here! Now!

Erica : Y… Y… Yes dad.

Mr. Berg : Do you have any relationship with Kartono?!

Erica : No… No papa, I do not know him.

Elizabeth : Erica… Please do not lie with us!

Erica : Ple… Please forgive me. He is a good man.

Mr. Berg : Oh God! Please! That bloody family again!

Elizabeth : We do not like it Erica!

Elizabeth : There is nothing to be discussed. Go back to your room now!

(At the other side)

Kartini : Do not you know how dangerous it Kartono?

Kartono : I cannot do that mom. It is not easy to do it.

have a contact with Kartono or not. No one should not know about it.

Scene 8 (At the Farm )

One day, Mr. Van Zuckerberg visited Kartono to meet him. He wanted to warn Kartono and
asking their debt. They have a conversation in the farm.

Mr. Berg : Kartono!

Kartono : Yes Sir… Can I help you?

Mr. Berg : Help me? Yes, of course. We have something to be discussed.

Kartono : Yes Sir… What is that?

Mr. Berg : Do you know how much the rest of your debt Kartono?

Kartono : I do not know Sir.

Mr. Berg : Cannot you count that?

Kartono : I cannot Sir.

Mr. Berg : Ah… You know… Erica can count that simple matter. She is an educated

woman just like other dutch people. What about you?

Kartono : But… But I can learn it Sir.

Mr. Berg : Do not you understand what I mean bloody slave! The only thing you need is

stay away from her! A kind people like you is not what I need to be my

family. Just stay away from her Kartono or the bad thing will be happened.

Kartono : Yes Sir…

Scene 9 (At the Erica’s house )

Since that time, it is hard for Erica to meet Kartono. Erica does not know the reason why
Kartono being like this. It is not like at past where they can spend the time together. She really
miss Kartono so much.

Erica : I do not know what I must do. It is hard to find him.

Veronica : I think I know his reason.

Erica : What do you mean?

Veronica : Do not you know how angry papa? And I think it is better for you to leave

him and not try to find him anymore.

Erica : Why not? No one knows.

Veronica : Papa asked Magdalena to watch every steps you take. He wanted to know

whether you meet Kartono or not. Be careful.

Erica : Cannot I meet him anymore?

Veronica : No, You cannot. But you can send him your letter and I will help you.

Erica : But Kartono cannot write or read.

Veronica : Then I will do that for him.

(Erica begins crying)

Scene 10 (At the Erica’s house )

One day, a bad thing happened. Mr. Van Zuckerberg finally knows if his daughter is still having
a contact with Kartono. He gathers all of Kartono family and wants they die. But at the last the
quiet one, Kartono, does unpredictable thing to Mr. Van Zuckerberg.

Mr. Berg : Here we are with a few great people.

Elizabeth : So… Is he Kartono? A filthy stupid slave that tried to love my daughter!

Mr. Berg : I have told you Kartono but you did not understand. Here is the consequence.

You and your family is owing much money with me that is not completely

paid till today.

Kartini : But we have paid all of it and the rest is come from the interest you take. It is

not fair!

Waginem : Please forgive her Mr Berg. She is too young to understand.

Mr. Berg : And I never asked your father to owe from me.

Kartini : You are so greedy bloody white race! God will not bless you!

Mr. Berg : Shut up! (shoot Kartini)

Waginem : Kartini! Please wake up my dear! Kartini! (crying)

Kartono : Please forgive me my sister. It is my mistake (crying)

Mr. Berg : At the first, you are not completely paid it and then you are trying to take my

daughter. How dare you are!

Elizabeth : Be prepared for your turn Kartono! It is the last day for you!

Mr. Berg : This is the last day for you Kartono and I love to see it. Is there anything you

want to say?
Waginem : Oh no! Please Mr. Berg! You have taken my daughter!

Kartono : Do you want to shoot me huh? Just shoot!

Mr. Berg : Well, that is your wish (shoot Kartono)

Waginem : No!

Kartono : Mom! What the hell you are thinking huh? You must die too Zuckerberg!

Mr. Berg : You can try it (shoot kartono)

Kartono : You are bloody….. (fell down to the floor)

Mr. Berg : It is too easy. Well Elizabeth please ask some people to clean out those trash.

Elizabeth : Okay, I will do it. (goes to the outside)

Kartono : Is this what you can? (chokes with rob)

Mr. Berg : You… You….

(Erica comes to the inside and scream)

Erica : Papa! What are you doing Kartono!

Kartono : She killed my family Erica and almost killed me.

Erica : Oh my God… I never want it happened.

Kartono : So am I. I have to leave this place. There is nothing that I can do here. I have

no one here. I have lost everything I have. I have lost you too.

Erica : I cannot say anything now. It is too hard for me.

Kartono : Erica… Listen… I do not have much time, I have to go. I will take a train

next week to the Surabaya. I have to cure my paint first when I am hiding.

They must be wanted to kill me. Thank for everything.

(walks approached his mother and sister)

Kartono : As a son I cannot make you feel happy mom. As a brother I cannot protect

you my sister. Please forgive me. It is hard for me but I have to go.

Erica : Kartono!

Scene 10 (At the Train Station )

Kartono decided to leave his hometown. He runs and runs until find a safe place to hide. After
his pain cured. He goes to the station to get train to the Surabaya. But there is a few people
looking for him. They know where he is.

Kartono : Erica must be told it. (covering his face)

Magdalena : You must be Kartono, are not you?

Kartono : No madam, I am not Kartono.

Magdalena : I know that you have killed Mr. Berg and there is someone looking for you.

(Erica and Veronica comes)

Kartono : Erica! What are you doing here?!

Erica : Please bring me out of here. I only need you. And Magdalena, what are you

doing here?! Do not you feel satisfied?! I know you must be tell with papa if

I still having a contact with Kartono.

Veronica : Just calm down Erica. She does not do that.

Magdalena : Yes Ms. Erica, when your father asks me, I never tell the truth. I know that

you always buy some cake to Kartono or even write a letter for him.

Erica : So… who was tell it to father?

Magdalena : The girl named Sumi.

Kartono : Sumi?
Magdalena : Yes she is. She always watch you kartono. Seeing you from safe place and

always want to know what you do. She knows that Veronica brings you the

letter then help you to read and write.

Veronica : Woman can be crazy when in love, just like you (smiling). The train will

be going now. Please send me the letter and tell me if you need any help.

(Magdalena and Veronica leave them)

Kartono : Do you really want to go with me? I cannot promise you many things. I do

not even know what will be happened to me.

Erica : I believe you and we can start our life together.

Kartono : This is not as good as like your imagination.

Erica : But it will not as bad as your imagination too. Good thing and bad thing have

same chance and risk.

Kartono : Thank for believe me Erica.

Erica : You are most welcome honey.

Erica and Kartono go to the Surabaya. They leave their hometown. Sumi becomes crazy because
she thinks Kartono died. Veronica organizes the farm and together with Magdalena, She keeps
the secret well and sometimes goes to the Surabaya to visit Erica and Kartono. Elizabeth and
Madonna choose to go to their homeland, Netherland. At the last, Kartini and Waginem are rest
in peace forever.
