1. ARITHMETIC MEAN
Definition: The arithmetic mean of a set of data is found by taking the sum of the data, and
then dividing the sum by the total number of values in the set. A mean is commonly referred
to as an average.
Population Mean

Example 1: Find the population mean driving speed for 6 different cars on the same highway.
66 + 57 + 71 + 54 + 69 + 58 375

Example 2: The John family drove through 4 midwestern states on their summer vacation.
Gasoline prices varied from state to state. What is the mean gasoline price?

Example 1: Sam wants to buy a new camera, and decides on the following rating system:
Image Quality 50%
Battery Life 30%
Zoom Range 20%
The Sony camera gets 8 (out of 10) for Image Quality, 6 for Battery Life and 7 for Zoom Range
The Conan camera gets 9 for Image Quality, 4 for Battery Life and 6 for Zoom Range

COMBINED MEAN
A combined mean is a mean of two or more separate groups
𝑋1 𝑛1 + 𝑋2 𝑛2 + ⋯ + 𝑋𝑘 𝑛𝑘
𝑋𝐶 =
𝑛1 + 𝑛2 + ⋯ + 𝑛𝑘
Example: Suppose you are running a survey on math proficiency (as measured by an achievement test) in
kindergarten, and you have results from two different schools.
In school 1, 57 kindergarteners were tested and their mean score was 82.
In school 2, 23 kindergartners were tested and their mean score was 63.
What will be the combine average score of both schools 1 and 2 ?
82 × 57 + (63 × 23)
𝑋𝐶 = = 76.5
57 + 23
Practice Question 1:
The average time to read a block of text for each of 5 schools are given below. What is the combined
average time of all students for 5 schools?
Practice Question 2:
Out of 100 numbers, 20 were 4s, 40 were 5s, 30 were 6s and the remainder were 7s. Find the mean of the
numbers.
GEOMETRIC MEAN
The geometric mean is a type of average , usually used for growth rates, like population growth or interest rates. While
the arithmetic mean adds items, the geometric mean multiplies items. Also, you can only get the geometric mean for
positive numbers.
Formally, the geometric mean is defined as “…the nth root of the product of n numbers.”
𝐺. 𝑀 = 𝑛 𝑥1 × 𝑥2 × ⋯ × 𝑥𝑛
𝐿𝑜𝑔 𝐺. 𝑀 = 𝐿𝑜𝑔 𝑛 𝑥1 × 𝑥2 × ⋯ × 𝑥𝑛
1
= 𝐿𝑜𝑔 𝑥1 × 𝑥2 × ⋯ × 𝑥𝑛
𝑛
log 𝑥1 + log 𝑥2 + ⋯ + log 𝑥𝑛
𝐿𝑜𝑔 𝐺. 𝑀 =

What the answer of 1.51 is telling you is that if you multiplied your initial investment by 1.51 each year, you would get the
same amount as if you had multiplied it by 1.5, 1.2 and 1.9.
