Arts and Crafts of Luzon

Arts and crafts are important means of expression, which communicate views,
ideas, and feelings through the use of skills and imagination. These are important
parts of our daily lives and can be found everywhere.
This lesson will take you to the journey of arts and crafts of Luzon (highland and
lowlands). You will be familiar with the different designs, motifs and history of their
attires, fabrics, crafts, and accessories; pottery, clothing, furniture,being used by the
people of different regions.

Ilocos Region
Architecture
 Vigan, considered as the “Intramuros of the North”,
Textile
 Inabel is a hand weaving technique of the Ilocanos that is produced using
traditional wooden looms. Designs of these fabrics are inspired by natural
elements: patterns that depict landforms, colors of flowers and vegetation,
plaid, zigzags, animal patterns, waves or the night sky.
Pottery
 Burnay is an unglazed earthen jar with small opening.it is used to keep their
food or water.
Pangasinan
Weaving
 Woven Bolinao mats made from buri or raffia leaves and the bamboo crafts
(baskets, furniture)

Kalinga
Textile
 The natives of Kalinga are skilled weavers
 Kain, one of their finest products, which is characterized by red stripes and
white, yellow and black geometrical patterns. It is a wrap-around skirt being
use by the Kalinga women.
Basketry
 The labba is a bowl-shaped basket made from rattan, with sizes that vary
from 20-150 cm in diameter
Tattooing
 It is another form of art in this place, because it usually covers the chest and
the arms, it may be considered as clothing and decoration.
Ifugao
 The term Ifugao means people from the hills, that is why non-cordilleran’s
called them igorots but they prefer the first one. Their arts and culture
revolves around rice.
Nueva Viscaya
 The Gaddangs of this place are known for their crafts and texlites.
Batanes. They are known for their Bakwat , a belt used by mothers after
giving birth.
 The Ivatan women wears a head gear called vakul. This special clothing is
woven from abaca fiber or the vuyavuy palm.
Pampanga
 Known for their giant lanterns or parol
 Food is an important part of their culture and a source of artistic expression.
Bulacan
 The historic town of Bulacan is regarded as the center of anon making before
the coming of the Spaniards.
 Their arts and crafts include the singkaban, pastillas wrapper , and fire
crackers. Singkaban is the local term for bamboo arches elaborately designed
with kayas.
Laguna
 The lagunense are proud of their wood carving in Paete, Laguna
 Lucban is famous for its Barong Tagalog that are carefully woven by hands or
embroidered to perfection.

 Other form of folk art of Laguna are kayas and taka. Taka is a peppier mache
technique while kayas is a type of art made by scrapping the softwood
thriving in Sierra Madre Mountains and then into beautiful floral decorations.
Rizal Province
 The Art Capital of the Philippines, because of the town’s rich artistic
expressions that includes music, painting, sculpting and folk arts.
 Also known for Higantes Festival.
Taal, Batangas
 Famous for producing embroidered piña fabrics, like barong, wedding gowns
and formal attires.
 Balisong, also known as butterfly knife. Its name is derived from “bali”,the
Filipino term for broken, and “sungay” which means horn.
 Batangas is also known as Balisong Capital in the Philippines.
Quezon
 The town of Lucban is famous for their Pahiyas Festival.
 During the festival, the townspeople decorate their houses with produce and
colorful thin rice wafers called Kiping. The kiping is made from ground
glutinous rice that is thinly coated on mature leaves and steamed over low
fire.
Bicol Region
 Among the arts and crafts of this region includes, baskets, bags, slippers,
coin purses and other crafts that are made from abaca and raffia fibers.

What to learn?

The craftsmanship of people from a local area that shows their everyday life as
they are handed down from one generation to another is called folk arts. The arts
and crafts of the highlands and lowlands of Luzon is composed of weaving in which
they used pinya cloth to be woven into tapestries, and other garments. It also
includes pottery which refers to the ceramic ware made by potters or the material of
which the pottery ware is made. Carving is one of the arts and crafts in Luzon too,
the bulol or the "|fugao rice god" was among the carvings made by Filipinos. Our
ancestors were known to wear elaborate jewelry made of gold. It is an expression of
purity and simplicity, the creation of biased, subjective vision. Until today these arts
and crafts are highly valued by most of the Filipinos.
