Name: Roll No.:

1. Which act of EPA is responsible for the initiation of Green Chemistry in the US?
Answer: EPA (the Environmental Protection Agency) Pollution Prevention Act of
1990 was the first act that focused on prevention at the source itself, leading to an
interest in Green Chemistry.

2. Who introduced the term “Green Chemistry” and which year?

Answer: The term “Green Chemistry” was introduced by Paul T. Anastas in the
year 1991.

3. Who founded the Green Chemistry Institute and which year?

Answer: Dr. Joe Breen founded the Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) in 1997.

4. Which year ‘the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award” was created for
scientific innovation in academia and industry that advances green chemistry? To
whom the first Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award was given?
Answer: In 1995, ‘the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award” was
created for scientific innovation in academia and industry that advance green

chemistry. First Award was given to BHC Company for the Greener Synthesis of
Ibuprofen.

5. Name the institute where the first Ph. D. programme in green chemistry was
established and which year.
Answer: In 1997, the first Ph. D. programme in green chemistry was established at
the University of Massachusetts in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

6. Who formulated and published the 12 Principles of green chemistry and which
year?
Answer: Paul T. Anastas and John C. Warner were formulated and published the
12 principles of green chemistry in the year 1998.
7. Name the first journal on ‘Green Chemistry’. In which year it was published by
which Society?
Answer: In 1999, the Royal Society of Chemistry launched its journal Green
Chemistry.
8. Write down the ‘Mnemonics word’ for the 12 Principles of green chemistry. Who
gave this mnemonic word?
Answer: The Mnemonics for the 12 Principles of green chemistry is ‘Productively’
Samantha L. Y. Tang, Richard L. Smith and Martyn Poliakoff were given the
mnemonic word for twelve principle of green chemistry.

9. Write down ‘Inherently Safer Synthesis’ of carbaryl? Mention the name of the
chemical responsible for this particular disaster.
Answer: Carbaryl is often inexpensively produced by direct reaction of methyl
isocyanate with 1-naphthol.
C10H7OH + CH3NCO → C10H7OC(O)NHCH3
Alternatively,1-Naphthol is treated with excess phosgene to produce 1-
naphthylchloroformate, which is then converted to carbaryl by reaction
with methyl amine. The former process was carried out in Bhopal. In comparison,
the latter synthesis uses exactly the same reagents, but in a different sequence. This
procedure avoids the potential hazards of methyl isocyanate.

10. What are the reasons the percentage yield can’t be 100% of a chemical reaction
though it is 100% atom-economy?
Answer: The percentage yield cannot be 100% of a chemical reaction due to the
various factors such as competing reactions, unfavorable equilibrium, incomplete
extraction of the products, loss during distillation, recrystallization or other
purification techniques, among others
11. Can you think of an example where waste cannot be controlled or prevented?
Answer: Preparation of methyl m-nitrobenzoate from methyl benzoate by nitration
using a mixture of conc. HNO3 and H2SO4. The desired product obtained 68%,
Undesired products are ortho isomer 28% and 4% para isomer.
12. Give the IUPAC as well as Anastas and Warner definition of Green Chemistry.

Answer: Green Chemistry definition given by IUPAC as follows: “The invention,

design and applications of chemical products and process to reduce or to eliminate
the use of and generation of hazardous substances.’

According to Anastas and Werner: “Green Chemistry is the utilization of a set of

principles that reduces or eliminates the use or generation of hazardous substances
in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products’.

13. What is the full form NSAID? Name two drugs that are used as painkillers and give
their structure.
Answer: NSAID full form is ‘Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug’. Aspirin or
Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen.
