Mechanism of action:
Hypertension
 Highly to specific to vascular smooth muscle
 Inhibits the calcium channel found on smooth muscle
o Decreases the intracellular concentration of calcium
o Leads to smooth muscle cell relaxation
o Causes vasodilation
o Decreased blood pressure

Angina
 Can dilate coronary arteries
o Helps restore blood flow which can be obstructed by atherosclerotic plaque

Dosing & administration

 Hypertension
o Initial dose (30-60 mg po qd)
o Max dose (90 mg/day)
-Procardia: 120 mg/day
 Angina
o Initial dose (10 mg po tid)
o Max dose (180mg/day)
-doses greater than 120mg/day are rarely needed
