When is an area tourism site or not?

Before delving into a deeper understanding of tourism sites, it is important to define key words
that will often be encountered throughout the article.

What is tourism?

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines tourism as a social, cultural
and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places
outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes. These
people are called visitors (which may be either tourists or excursionists; residents or non-
residents) and tourism has to do with their activities, some of which imply tourism
expenditure.

With the above definition, it can be said that tourism does not only refer to the movement of the
people alone, but also the overall agglomeration of activities, services, and human interactions
that make up the entire tourist experience.

The relationship between travel and hospitality

While tourism is considered to be an all-encompassing umbrella term pertaining to the activities

and industries that

While tourism is the all-encompassing umbrella term for the activities and industry that create
the tourist experience, the UNWTO (2020) defines travel as the activity of moving between
different locations often for any purpose but more so for leisure and recreation (Hall & Page,
2006). On the other hand, hospitality can be defined as “the business of helping people to feel
welcome and relaxed and to enjoy themselves”

In simpler terms, travel is dynamic arm of tourism, whereas hospitality is the static – a retreat.

Introducing “Tourism Planning” (p.24)

Tourism strategies for greater success (p.40)

There are five ways to increase the success rate of tourism sites. These are through price-
based strategy, differentiation strategy, hybrid strategy, focus strategy, and the cluster strategy.

The popularity of “tourism circuits” (p.42)

A popular version of the cluster strategy is the tourism circuit. Attractions within the circuit
should not be separated by long distances. A visitor should be motivated to visit all the places
within the circuit.
Tourist circuits are used as a strategy to increase the total number of visits to all the
destinations within the circuit as well as provide tourists with a more rewarding experience and
value for money by providing a mix of attractions and activities in a destination.

Develop principal packages based on distinctive elements of the destination, and the market
which you want to attract (e.g., adult, family or short-stay market as against long- stay market).

Why staying unique and unforgettable is a must

Destination or holiday themes can be powerful in promoting tourist destinations. Themes can be
varied and the possibilities are endless. There are countryside themes (i.e. Countryside Tour of
Bohol); heritage (i.e., Vigan Heritage Tour; “Walk This Way” Intramuros Tour); cuisine themes
(i.e. Binondo Food Trip); wildlife (i.e., Dolphin and Whale Watching in Pamilacan, Bohol);
religious themes (i.e. Ilocandia Church Tour), aquatic theme (i.e., Calaguas Beach Escapades
and Bagasbas Surfing).

Forecasting the success of tourism sites (p.33)

There are two ways to gauge the future outcome of a declared tourism site – first is by
forecasting, and the second is by scenario planning.

The “inclusive destination concept,” integrating tourism sites in town planning (p.183)
