Topic: Autism

1. Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the treatment of autism spectrum disorder.
2. Central Idea: There is no single best treatment for all children with autism spectrum disorder,
but special treatments can be effective in improving the skills of children.
I. Introduction
Get the attention and interest: Did you know that 1 in 110 children in the United States has an
autism spectrum disorder? In Vietnam, according to figures reported by the Department of
Social Protection, autism in youngsters is now on the rise. Between 2000 and 2007, the number
of autistic youngsters more than doubled. By the end of 2008, Vietnam had over 200,000
autistic children. In recent years, there are currently no accurate statistics on the prevalence of
autism in the community. However, it is noted that the number of children with autism is
increasing and autism is a burden on families and society.
Reveal the topic: This can affect children of all social classes and races all over the world.
Recent research has been inconclusive as to the causes of ASD.
Establish credibility and goodwill:
I have a relative who has a child with autism spectrum disorder.
I have read and studied a lot of information about treatments of such disorders to help my
relatives.

Today I will explain the disorder, the first signs of ASD.

III. Conlusion
An ASD is a life-long condition. But intensive behavioral therapy during the toddler, or
preschool, years can significantly improve cognitive and language skills in young children with
ASD.
While there is no single treatment for autism, only a loving heart will tell a parent how to help the
child.

Introduction: Did you know that 1 in 110 ( one houdred and ten) children in the United States
has an autism spectrum disorder (dít só đơ)? In Vietnam, according to figures (fit gơ) reported
by the Department of Social Protection, from 2000 ( two thousand) and 2007 ( two thousand
and seven), the number of autistic youngsters more than doubled. By the end of 2008, Vietnam
had over 200,000 ( twwo hundred thousand) autistic children. In recent years, no accurate
statistics on the prevalence of autism in the community. Unfortunately, my aunt's child has
autism. I met and heard the story of her child. Since then, I have read articles (ác ti cô) as well
as medical texts on autism and how to treat it, hoping to help my aunt's child. Today I will
explain the disorder, the first signs (sain) of ASD.
Body:
Maintpoint 1: First I will explain autism. According to kidshealth, autism (also known as
autismspectrum disorder) refers to a group of developmental conditions that involve delayed or
impaired communication and social skills, behaviors, and cognitive skills. ASDs affect each
person in different ways, and can range from very mild to severe. People with ASDs share some
similar symptoms, such as problems with social interaction.
When people talk about autism spectrum disorders, they are referring to the three most
common pervasive developmental disorders.
1. Asperger Syndrome
People with Asperger syndrome usually have some milder symptoms of autistic disorder. They
might have social challenges and unusual behaviors and interests. However, they typically do
not have problems with language or intellectual ( in tơ léc triu ô) disability ( dis sơ bí li ty )
2. Pervasive Developmental Disorder also called “atypical autism”
People with autism often have fewer and milder symptoms than people with autism spectrum
disorders. Symptoms may only cause communication and social challenges.
3. Autistic Disorder (also called “classic” autism).
This is what most people think of when hearing the word “autism.” People with autistic disorder
usually have significant language delays, social and communication challenges. Many people
with autistic disorder also have intellectual disability.
Transition to point II: Now that I have explained what autism is, let’s discuss symptoms and
Early Signs of Autism.
Mainpoint 2: Behavioral symptoms of ASDs are hard to diagnose ( dái ợt nose) before 24
months, typically appear before a child is 3, although differences can appear even in the first
year of life. If signs are detected by 18 months of age, intensive treatment may help to reverse
the symptoms and rewire the brain. The early diagnosis( dái ợt no sits) and therapy ( phé ra py )
can be tremendously ( tri mén dịt ly) helpful in improving the behavior and abilities of children
with ASD.
Early signs of autism in babies and toddlers.
Doesn’t make eye contact.
Doesn’t smile when smiled at.
Doesn’t respond to their name.
Doesn’t visually follow objects.
Doesn’t make noises to get attention.
Doesn’t respond to, or initiate, cuddling.
Doesn’t imitate your movements and facial expressions.
Doesn’t play with other people, or share interest and enjoyment.
As children get older, the symptoms of autism become more diverse. There are many warning
signs and symptoms, but they typically revolve around impaired social skills, speech and
language difficulties, non-verbal communication difficulties and inflexible behavior.
Mainpoint 3: A range of teaching approaches and behavioral therapies are used to help
children develop skills in the areas where they’re having difficulties. Depending on the child’s
needs, occupational, physical and communication therapies may be very helpful too.
The most widely accepted type of treatment is the behavioral and communicative approach.
Applied behavior analysis (ABA). The goals of ABA are to shape and reinforce new behaviors,
such as learning to speak and play, and reduce undesirable ones.
Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR) – aims to build healthy and
meaningful relationships and abilities by following the natural emotions and interests of the
child.
Interpersonal Synchrony – targets social development and imitation skills, and focuses on
teaching children how to establish and maintain engagement with others.
In addition, there is no drug that can cure autism, or even treat the main symptoms. But certain
medications can help relieve symptoms that cause problems for children at school or at home.
All medications carry a risk of side effects.
Complementary and Alternative Treatments to relieve the symptoms of ASDs, some parents
and health care professionals use treatments that are outside of what is typically recommended
by the pediatrician. These types of treatments are known as alternative and complementary
treatments.
Knowledge is the most powerful weapon we have. Now that we are more informed about
autism, we will be more equipped to interact with children with autism as situations arise. Autism
is a long-term condition. But intensive behavioral therapy during the early years of detection can
significantly improve cognitive and language skills in young children with autism. Although there
is no single cure for autism, only a loving heart will tell parents how to help.
