Overview of the GRE® Comparison Tool and Table

For business schools and institutions that traditionally use the Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) exam in the admissions process, this Excel
workbook contains an interactive tool and table that provides a way to appropriately consider an applicant based on their Graduate Record Examinations®
(GRE®) General Test scores. Both the interactive tool and the table are designed to provide users with a predicted GMAT® Total score derived from an
applicant's GRE® Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores.

What is in this Excel workbook?

In addition to this Overview, there are three other worksheets in this workbook. You can access the other worksheets via the tabs at the bottom of the Excel
window.

• The GRE Comparison Tool contains the interactive worksheet. After entering an applicant's GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores
in this worksheet, you can view the applicant's predicted GMAT Total score. Information on the precision of the predicted score is provided via confidence
intervals and the likelihood of achieving various score levels. An annotated sample of this tool is found at the bottom of this Overview.

• The GRE Comparison Table contains the full table of predicted GMAT Total scores by every combination of GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative
Reasoning scores. The predicted GMAT Total scores will be the same when obtained from either the Comparison Table or the Comparison Tool.

• The Technical Guide provides more specific information on the statistical procedures used to create the prediction model and the characteristics of the
sample that provided the data.

How do the GRE and GMAT exams compare?

Scores from both the GRE General Test and the GMAT exam are used along with other information, such as undergraduate GPA and faculty recommendations,
to predict success in graduate school. The GRE General Test is used by graduate programs from the Arts and Humanities to the Sciences and Engineering,
while the GMAT exam has primarily been used by graduate Business programs.

Both the GRE General Test and the GMAT exam are designed to be appropriate for college seniors and college graduates (regardless of undergraduate major),
and report on the same three domains – Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Test administration is also similar for both tests. The
Verbal and Quantitative sections are computer-adaptive, multiple-choice exams, and the Analytical Writing sections of each test consist of two essays scored by
humans or a combination of human and electronic ratings. The GRE General Test was developed and has been administered by Educational Testing Service
(ETS) since its inception in 1949. The GMAT exam was developed by ETS for the Graduate Management Admissions Council® (GMAC®) in 1954 and was
administered by ETS until 2005.

Why a prediction model?

The two tests have a high correlation with each other, so it is reasonable to use the actual scores on one measure (the GRE test) to predict the likely score
range on the other (the GMAT exam) for a given applicant. However, for several reasons, it would not be appropriate to produce a concordance table stating
that a total score on one measure is directly equivalent to a total score on the other, and vice versa.

One reason is that the programs governing the tests make different recommendations for score use. The GRE General Test does not have a total score and the
program recommends keeping the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores separate when making admissions decisions, whereas the GMAT

One reason is that the programs governing the tests make different recommendations for score use. The GRE General Test does not have a total score and the
program recommends keeping the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores separate when making admissions decisions, whereas the GMAT
Total score, which combines Verbal and Quantitative, is most often used for admissions decisions. Consequently, a concordance of two single scores from each
exam is not possible, while a prediction model permits a GMAT Total score to be predicted from separate Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores
from the GRE General Test. A second reason is that while the GRE General Test and the GMAT exam use many similar question types and cover similar
domains, each test uses a unique framework, which specifies the subdomains covered in the test content as well as the difficulty level and proportion of
question types used on the test. Finally, the populations the tests have been normed on are also somewhat different. So while the scores from one test are not
directly interchangeable with the other, they can be compared using the prediction procedures specified here.

How are the predicted GMAT Total scores calculated?

The predicted GMAT Total scores were calculated using statistical analyses of the actual test scores of 525 persons who took both the GRE General Test and
the GMAT exam in actual operational, high-stakes conditions, between January 2006 and July 2008.

Using the statistical procedure of multiple linear regression, the participants' GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores were used to predict
their GMAT Total scores. Then the resulting prediction equation, which essentially summarizes the empirical relationship of the GRE and GMAT scores into a
simple algebraic equation, was used to create predicted GMAT scores for all combinations of GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores. The
regression analysis indicates that GRE Verbal and Quantitative Scores are significantly able to predict GMAT Total scores. Not surprisingly, given the similar
nature of the two tests, the correlation between the GRE scores and the GMAT score is quite high (.856). You can find more details, including the prediction
equation, in the Technical Guide.

The data used in the analyses came from actual GRE and GMAT score reports provided by GRE examinees who took both exams under standard operational
conditions. Since neither the GRE nor GMAT scores were obtained via an experimental setting, many of the issues that may impact comparisons of test results
were minimized, such as unreliable scores due to self-reporting or errors due to lack of effort, motivation or unfamiliarity with the exams. As the number of
persons who take both tests within a year is likely small, we believe this sample of 525 includes a large proportion of the population who actually took both tests
during the time period stated. You can find tables detailing how this sample compares to the typical GRE and GMAT test takers based on ability, background
and demographics in the Technical Guide.

What do the Standard Error and Confidence Intervals mean?
Standard error is the technical term for the lack of precision found with an individual test score. However, the term standard error can mean different things and is
calculated in different ways under different situations. For test scores from a single test administration, the standard error is calculated using the internal reliability
of the test (for instance, Cronbach's Alpha). Both the GRE General tests and the GMAT exam have very high internal reliability (usually over .90) so the standard
error tends to be low. This standard error of measurement is the most commonly reported standard error, but it is not the standard error used here.

A different standard error, the standard error of the estimate, is reported when using the score of one test to predict the score on a different test. That standard
error is calculated using the correlation of the scores from the two tests in place of the internal reliability. This correlation is generally lower than single-test
(internal) reliability because the error associated with each of the tests individually is compounded. The Standard Error reported in the Tool is calculated using the
correlation between the GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores and the GMAT Total score.

Confidence intervals use the standard error as the starting point to create a range of values around the estimated score that indicates how confident we can be
that the score estimate is accurate. The magnitude of that range is based on the size of the standard error and the level of "confidence" desired. The level of
confidence is stated as the percent of the time the actual score would fall within the specified range, and is based on a normal curve distribution. One standard
error represents a confidence interval of approximately 68%, which is evenly distributed as 34% above and 34% below the estimated score. In the Comparison
Tool, a confidence interval of 90% was used; in the Technical Guide, you can calculate a confidence interval for any level from 0.1% to 99.9%.

The predicted GMAT Total score will display here. The Standard Error indicates how much the predicted GMAT Total score might vary from an applicant's actual GMAT Total
B score. About two-thirds of the time predicted scores will fall within one standard error, in about 95% within two standard errors.

This graph shows the predicted GMAT Total score (square) with the 90% Confidence Interval (lines extending above and below). With a 90% Confidence Interval, the probability
C that the applicant's actual GMAT score would fall either below or above the range is only 5% in either direction. The Confidence Intervals on the graph truncate at the actual score
range of the GMAT exam so they do not extend below 200 or above 800.

This table indicates the likelihood, based on the predicted GMAT Total score and the Standard Error, that the applicant's actual GMAT score would be at or above each score at

Technical Guide for the GRE® Comparison Tool and Table

Description of the Statistical Procedures

The predicted GMAT® Total scores were calculated from a multiple linear regression equation. GRE® Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores were used as the
predictor (independent) variables and the GMAT Total score was used as the predicted (dependent) variable. A third predictor, the interaction of GRE Verbal and Quantitative,
was included in one version of the model but was dropped because it was found not to be a significant predictor.

The regression equation: GMAT Total = -76.64 + 0.469*GRE Verbal Score + 0.619*GRE Quantitative Score

The correlation of the GRE Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores with the GMAT Total score based on the above regression equation is .856.

The standard error of the predicted GMAT Total score is 67.4. The formula used to calculate the SE:
2 is calculated by multiplying2the Standard
The size of the confidence interval (CI) is based on the percent used to set the range and the accuracy of theS.E. =  GMAT
prediction model.1The
 rCI or 130.32 1  (.856)
Error of the prediction with the corresponding z-score of the level of precision desired in the CI. The resulting CI is added and subtracted from the predicted score. This gives
the range of predicted scores that the actual score would be expected to fall between for the percent confidence required.

The graphs and table in the Comparison Tool use a 90% confidence interval, which is +/-110.9 points on the GMAT Total scale.

The calculation is equal to 67.4 * +/-1.645 (the z-score that leaves a 5% chance the actual score would fall above or below the range, allowing 90% to fall within). Confidence
intervals for other ranges can be calculated here by entering a value between 0.01% and 99.99% in the boxes below.

Percent CI +/- 0.0 Percent CI +/- 0.0 Percent CI +/- 0.0

The predicted GMAT Total scores are rounded to 10-point increments reflecting the scale of the test. Scores predicted to be below 200 were changed to 200 to reflect the actual
base of the scale. The highest predicted GMAT Total score was 794.
Description of the Sample
The sample used in the analysis includes the test scores of 525 examinees who took both the GMAT exam and the GRE test between January 2006 and July 2008.
Background information obtained when the examinees took the GRE test helps describe the sample. All percents are based on those who responded to the particular
question and is compared to the population of GMAT examinees in 2006/2007.
