Activity 5:
Protein
I. Overview:
Proteins and other essential elements are not excreted by healthy kidneys;
instead, they pass through and return to your circulation. However, damaged
kidneys may allow this protein to enter your urine. Your urine becomes highly
proteinate as a result of this. Anyone's urine can contain protein.
II. Objectives:
1. To determine the presence of peptide bond in a substance.
2. To determine the measures of concentration of urine protein.
3. To determine and to measure the total of albumin and measures the
amount of protein in the blood.
III. Materials:
Google, Wikipedia, Internet, Laptop

V. Question and Answer:
1. What does it mean when urine test shows protein?
- Protein can enter your urine through your kidneys' filters when they
aren't functioning as they should. Proteinuria or albuminuria is the term for
protein in your urine. It indicates that your kidneys are in bad shape.
2. Can protein in urine be cured?
- If your proteinuria is mild or only lasts for a short while, you might not
need therapy. But before kidney failure occurs, it's important to address kidney
disease. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or both, your doctor may
recommend medication.
3. What is a normal protein level in urine?
- You should typically have no more than 150 milligrams (about 3% of a
teaspoon) of protein per day in your urine. Proteinuria is defined as 150 mg or
more per day.
4. Why does the biuret test always come up positive?
- Those substances that possess two or more peptide bonds can pass this
test (CO-NH group). Due to the fact that every protein and peptide contains at
least two peptide linkages. It is practical to identify the presence of proteins in
biological fluids using the biuret test principle.
