Styles Set #54: “Mainstream Jazz”

®

Styles for Band-in-a-Box

Introduction and Overview
Please note: Some features found in this styles set require Band-in-a-Box 2006 or later. The styles will play fine on
previous versions but the “instrument change in the ‘b’ section” feature will be unavailable.

Thank you for purchasing Styles Set #54, with 21 great new “Mainstream Jazz” styles for Band-in-a-Box.

This styles set features Mainstream Jazz styles from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. Many of these styles were inspired
by requests and suggestions posted in the Styles Wish List forum on our web page at www.pgmusic.com. Many are based
on Jazz feels that have become very popular and widely used. You’ll find styles with rhythm feels like 4/4 Swing Jazz
styles, Ballads, Jazz waltzes, even 8th feel Jazz, Jazz Funk, styles with different feels in the “a” and “b” sections, Funk Jazz
and Bossas - styles with names like BossaSw, BrubkBal, Darin1, Deodat1, Duke1, JzClypso, ModJazQt, Ramsey1,
TradDixi, Horace1, Herbie2, and many more. A few of the styles are designed for big band vocal accompaniment.

A great feature added in Band-in-a-Box 2006 allows instrument changes in the “b” section of tunes. Many of these
styles make use of this new feature. The styles will play fine on previous versions, but if you don’t have Band-in-a-Box
2006 or later the “instrument change in the ‘b’ section” feature will be unavailable. In most cases, the instrument changes
are subtle and are used to brighten up or slightly change the “b” section. For example, an acoustic bass at “a” might change
to a fretless bass at “b.” Some styles like EVEN_SW.STY or BRUBKBAL.STY feature 2 distinctly different rhythmic
feels for each section.

Effects like reverb, chorus, and panning are not embedded in a style, so these settings should be set and saved with
the tune from the main song page (Alt+F2). The demo tunes for these styles follow the same naming convention as the
styles themselves. For example, the DEMO song for JZCLYPSO.STY is JZCLYPSO.MGU.

To easily check out these new styles and demos, open any style in the Styles54 folder, then use the Jukebox to
audition the demos and styles. (Tip: Uncheck “Change Melody Instrument.”) Here’s another way to check out the styles;
press the [Style…] button to get to the Select Style window. In the “Only show styles disk #” drop-down list select “#54
Mainstream Jazz,” then highlight the individual styles and press the [Load Song Demo] button. It’s a good idea to
uncheck “Auto Change Melody/Soloist patch” so that you’ll hear the correct demo melody instrument. You will also find
these styles listed under the “Jazz” category. More detailed information about each style is available by pressing the
[Memo] button of the demo tune.

At our PG Music home page, www.pgmusic.com, you’ll find lots of interesting downloads, demos, streaming
videos, magazine and customer reviews, including streaming audio-visual program tutorials, and more. Review your
favorite products or stop by the Styles Wish List page, where you can request specific styles or leave feedback and
suggestions - that’s how we stay in touch with you. For example, if you would like even more of these Mainstream Jazz
styles, that’s the place to let us know. So drop in and check it out.

We hope you enjoy these “Mainstream Jazz” styles.

Have fun.
