Considered to be the first great Thomas Edison invention, and his life-long favorite, the
phonograph would record the spoken voice and play it back.
When speaking into the receiver, the sound vibration of the voice would cause a needle to
create indentations on a drum wrapped with tin foil. Later Edison would adopt cylinders and
Self-educated; some coursework discs to permanently record music.
The first recorded message was of Thomas Edison speaking “Mary had a little lamb”, which
at Cooper Union greatly delighted and surprised Edison and his staff when they first heard it played back to them.

Inventor created the first device to both record sound and play it back. He was

Edison’s eperiments with the telephone and the telegraph led to his invention of the phonograph in 1877. It occured to him
that sound could be recorded as indentations on a rapidly-moving piece of paper. He eventually formulated a machine with a
tinfoil-coated cylinder and a diaphragm and needle.

Edisonn slept little for he was gripped by a passion for manipulating electrical currents in new ways. In 1876, he set upa laboratory in
Menlo Park, New Jersey where he could devote his full attention to invention. He promised that he would turn out a minor invention
