Phonograph or
Gramophone
• Phonograph, in its later forms also called a gramophone
(as a trademark since 1887, as a generic name in the UK
since 1910) or since the 1940s called a record player, is a
device for the mechanical recording and reproduction of
sound. The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas
Edison.
• Edison spoke into the horn and the sound energy from
his voice, funneled and concentrated by the horn, made
the needle vibrate up and down. As Edison cranked a
handle, the cylinder rotated and the needle cut a groove
into the foil. Since the needle was moving up and down,
the depth of the groove varied according to how loud or
soft his voice was; in other words, the groove was a
recording of the sound of Edison's voice translated into a
mechanical form.
Light Bulb
• Light bulb, when we hear this our first thought is
Thomas Edison. He invented the light bulb and it one
of his most successful inventions ever.
• Light bulbs with a carbon filament were first
demonstrated by Joseph Swan in February 1879, and
by Edison in October 1879.Carbon filament bulbs, the
first electric light bulbs, became available
commercially in 1879
• January 1879, at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New
Jersey, Edison had built his first high resistance,
incandescent electric light. It worked by passing
electricity through a thin platinum filament in the
glass vacuum bulb, which delayed the filament from
melting. Still, the lamp only burned for a few short
hours.
Other Inventions
• Thomas Edison (February
11, 1847 – October 18,
1931) had many other
inventions such as movie
camera, kinetoscope,
electric power distribution,
electric pen(it is used as a
tattooing pen at present),
vacuum diode.
