The mission was set to launch on 22 January but was suspended due to technical
drawbacks. The date ran on to 28 January 1986. This year's launch program was
ambitious. The missions had to be met by date.

THE MISSION HAD SEVERAL PURPOSES:

1. to launch a communications satellite and a space vehicle to observe the Halley comet.
2. the aim of having a reusable vehicle was to reduce the costs of access to space.

attention back to the manned space program.

73 seconds after launch, the Space Shuttle Challenger, disintegrated killing all seven crew

was extensive:
a study revealed that 85% of Americans interrogated had heard the news during the time after
the accident. The Challenger accident has been used as a case of study in many discussions on
