1 Test Your Pencil

Create tones from light to dark using the


overhand grip. In each step apply a little bit higher
pressure on the paper.

If you’re left-handed, start with the lightest value


on the right, so your hand doesn’t cover your
previous tone.

2 Create a 11-Step Value Scale

Order to follow:

Start with the darkest tone you can make with


your pencil on the right (10).

Then make the mid-tone in the middle (5).

Now, make the light tones: (1), (2), (3), (4).

Finally, make the dark tones: (6), (7), (8), (9).

Try to stay inside the outlines with your strokes.


Use your eraser if you need to.

Values should be evenly distributed. Add


additional layers at the end wherever it’s
necessary.

3 Identify and Copy Values

Cut your 11-step value scale from Task 2.

Place it over the cubes and pair each surface with a value number.
Make notes on these numbers.

Now, create these values one by one on the line drawings.


Try to make a uniform value within an area.
