EXPLANATION OF THE COAT OF ARMS
OF HIS EMINENCE
JOSE F. CARDINAL ADVINCULA
ARCHBISHOP OF MANILA

This signifies the missionary call of the Filipino people to
plant the faith, not only in Asia, but throughout the world. By this,
the Filipino faithful proclaim that they cannot “glory except in the
cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Gal. 6:14).

At the sinister base of the shield is a mountain, on
top of it is a horse, a crescent moon, and a five pointed star. The
mountain depicts Mt. Panginraon in the town of Dumalag, Capiz,
the Cardinal’s birthplace and hometown that is seen as an array
of greenery that shows some strips of limestone formation. The
horse refers to St. Martin of Tours, Patron Saint of Soldiers, the
patron saint of the parish and town of Dumalag. The crescent moon
symbolizes the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Immaculate Conception,
the titular patroness of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Capiz
where the Cardinal comes from, and the St. Pius X Seminary in
Roxas City, Capiz where the Cardinal finished his minor seminary
formation and philosophical studies. The five-pointed star is a pre-
eminent symbol for the virtue of faith and of De La Salle University-
Manila where the Cardinal finished his Master of Arts in Guidance
and Counseling. The viewpoint of psychology has made a strong
influence in the manner and pastoral style of the Cardinal.
6
The motto of the Cardinal, AUDIAM (I WILL LISTEN),
is taken from 1 Samuel 3:10, where we see the Lord calling Samuel
three times. On the third call, at the instruction of Eli, Samuel finally
responded “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” He believes that
only in prayerful listening to God’s inspiration and guidance can he
bring the good news of salvation to the people. By starting with a
listening heart, the Cardinal can truly shepherd his flock.

THE INTRODUCTORY RITES
When the people are gathered, Cardinal Advincula approaches the altar with
the ministers while the Entrance Chant is sung. When he has arrived at the altar,
after making a profound bow with the ministers, the Cardinal venerates the
altar with a kiss and incenses the cross and the altar. Then, with the ministers,
he goes to the chair.
10
When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Cardinal and the faithful, standing,
sign themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Cardinal, facing the

12
COLLECT
Let us pray.
And all pray in silence with the Cardinal for a while. Then the Cardinal,
with hands extended, says:
L ord God,
you have shown us in the Blessed Virgin Mary
the model of sublime love and profound humility;
grant that your Church may be like her,
obedient to your commandment of love,
so that by giving itself wholeheartedly
to seeking your glory and to serving others
it may stand before all peoples
as the Sacrament of your love.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
With one heart the disciples continued in steadfast prayer with Mary,
the mother of Jesus
All reply:
Thanks be to God.
14
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 87:1-2,3 and 5,6-7
ALLELUIA
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
O happy Virgin, you gave birth to the Lord;
O blessed mother of the Church,
you warm our hearts with the Spirit of your Son Jesus Christ.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
15
GOSPEL John 2:1-11
The mother of Jesus was there. And his disciples believed in him.
16
And when the headwaiter tasted the water
that had become wine,
without knowing where it came from
(although the servers who had drawn the water knew),
the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
“Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;
but you have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee
and so revealed his glory,
and his disciples began to believe in him.
All reply:

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
Cardinal:
With Mary, the Mother of the Church,
we now approach our heavenly Father
with confidence that our prayers will be answered.
That our community may reach out with love and care
to people ignored by society.
Let us pray to the Lord.
18
That those who have died in Christ
may be received in the Lord’s Kingdom.
Let us pray to the Lord.
Cardinal:
Amen.
19
LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
When all this has been done, the Offertory Chant begins. Meanwhile,
the ministers place the corporal, the purificator, the chalice, the pall,
and the Missal on the altar.

Fr. Carlo Magno Marcelo

The Cardinal then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above
the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Cardinal may speak
these words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

other minister then incenses the Cardinal and the people.
Then the Cardinal, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands,
saying quietly:
Amen.

Remember, Lord, your Church,

Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,

welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
