Survey of Philippine Literature

Activity 1. Write a persuasive essay (not less than 10 sentences) on why students
should learn to appreciate or value literature.
PERSUASIVE ESSAY
Literature broadly is any collection of written work, but it is also used more
narrowly for writings specifically considered to be an art form, especially prose fiction,
drama, and poetry.
If we study Literature, we may able to learn to appreciate words and their power
to travel to other realms and times through the texts we read. We understand our own
culture and learn to empathize with characters, to feel their joys and pain. In retaliation
to this, literature introduces us to a rich language, helps to develop and discover good
skills and words, discover a new self, since the problems in society through a critical
view, explore texts with new perspectives, read about culture, understand the value of
poetry, and gain the literary skills of classics.
Moreover, a window gets provided to us if we study literature to see the outer
world through the eyes of literary genres. It makes us understand the way every
society and culture has historical records as well for it’s like a pathway to give
everyone adventurous experiences. We also get to develop through literature by
sufficient data we gather to cater to and support our claims which is why we young
students shall be reading more about literature to open our minds and heart to a
greater understanding of ourselves and the world.

Activity 2. List at least 3 notable descriptions/characteristics that would best describe


the different periods in Philippine Literature
Literature under the Pre-colonial Period (-1564)
a. Oral Traditions - a form of human communication wherein knowledge, art, ideas and
cultural material is received, preserved, and transmitted orally from one generation to
another. Example: Babaylan, female mystical healers whose spiritual connectedness
was a source of political and social power.
b. Crude on Ideology- is marked by the primitive, gross, or elemental or by uncultivated
simplicity or vulgarity.
c. Phraseology- The way in which words and phrases are used in speech or writing;
style. 
Literature under the Spanish Colonialism (1565-1897)
a. Epics- a long narrative poem in elevated style recounting the deeds of a legendary or
historical hero like the Iliad and the Odyssey
b. Legends- A legend is a genre of folklore that consists of a narrative featuring
human actions, believed or perceived, both by teller and listeners, to have taken
place in human history. Examples of legends are Ali Baba, the Fountain of Youth,
Paul Bunyan, Kraken, Atlantis and etc.
c. Riddles- a question or statement intentionally phrased so as to require ingenuity
in ascertaining its answer or meaning, typically presented as a game. Example:
What has to be broken before you can use it? Answer: An egg
