By the end of this module, the students will have been able to:
1. Recognize engineering innovations that show huge potential to benefit society.
2. Attribute the applications of engineering innovations in society.
3. Critique engineering innovations to solve problems related to the new normal.
Are you aware that houses and internal organs could now be 3D-printed?
Are you aware that there are professions that could be replaced by machines?
Do you have an idea how the weather is being predicted?
Do you have an idea that social media platforms use our data to enhance their services?
3D Printing
3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, is the process of creating a three-dimensional object
from a Computer Aided-Design model through laying down a heated or melted filament, layer by
layer. 3D printing keeps on disrupting advancements in assembling and prototyping as it requires
quick and minimal effort, unlike traditional assembling methods such as CNC machining, shaping,
and framing (Kalsoom, 2018).
Applications
3D printing has been very useful during catastrophic events, as what happened during the 2015 Nepal
earthquake, it was utilized to repair water lines by making water pipe fittings. Building a house using
3D-printing technology has been explored and utilized to address housing problems for homeless and
poor communities. Also, concerning the areas of health, utilization of 3D printing technology to create
real organs such as heart and kidney has been started. In a similar manner, dental and prosthetic
applications of 3D printing are now widely used. Some coral reefs are now made through 3D printing,
one of its fascinating applications considering the environmental aspect (Miles, 2019).
Applications
The diverse application of AI has been adopted in various sectors. In healthcare, to achieve quick
judgment than humans could, some pharmaceutical companies are now considering AI to help
medical practitioners and patients. In the business sector, some of the jobs having a repetitive function
are now displaced with automation to improve capacity and efficiency. Teachers on the side of
education use AI to automate their work, such as checking and reviewing that helps them lessen their
tasks and, at the same time, help also students accomplishing their requirements at their own pace. AI
has now been used in the transportation sector by developing autonomous vehicles using sensors and
processing data from the surroundings. AI researches are now considered for cyborg technology to
upgrade the capacities of a human being (House of Bots, 2019).
Applications
Various applications of big data analytics have been employed in education. Some examples are
customized learning programs, reframing course material, grading systems, and career prediction
(Intellipaat, 2016).
In the field of healthcare, big data can minimize the treatment expenses since there will be a lesser
chance of making unnecessary findings. Big data also helps anticipate future epidemic outbreaks,
detect early stages of diseases, and give patients medications that are research-based considering
previous medical results.
The government also is a beneficiary of big data; this is through utilizing the records of its citizens to
address the country's challenges such as terrorism, rate of unemployment, catching tax evaders,
exploring energy resources, and to make programs guided by analyzed datasets.
Media and entertainment use big data to gain advantages in using comprehensive information to
predict the interest of people, optimize media stream scheduling, and get knowledge from customer
surveys and effective commercials.
Analyzing data from sensors and satellites helps to conduct weather forecasting, understand natural
disaster patterns, study global warming, and prepare in case of crisis.
The transportation industry gains the benefits of big data through route arranging, traffic congestion
management, traffic control, and safety level of traffic through real-time handling of big data.
The banking sector reaps rewards of big data through risk mitigation, money laundering, customer
insights modification, and venture credit risk treatment (Intellipaat, 2016).
The above examples of engineering innovations that show huge potential to benefit society are just a
few examples, for more information about the emerging innovations and technologies, see the video
presentation found in the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ezqG29uymo
It talks about the 4th Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0). It was emphasized that the early adopters of
Industry 4.0 would be rewarded, and those who will avoid change will soon become irrelevant and
You can also explore emerging technologies such as; Internet of things (IoT), Augmented reality, Cloud
computing and, Cybersecurity.
GRADED ACTIVITY:
Considering the several examples of engineering innovations discussed in the previous section, and
our current situation in the midst of a pandemic, think of a specific problem where you can apply at
least one technological innovation to solve a societal issue that you may identify. Elaborate your
answer guided by the rubrics provided.
In summary,
• Innovation plays a crucial role in the advancement of our technology.
• Innovation Engineering is the adoption of emerging technologies to solve business and
organizational problems.
• A company, industry, or institution who will fail to adopt changes and innovations will
become irrelevant and will be left behind.
• The components of industry 4.0 are the key driver of emerging technological innovations.
