By the end of this module, the student should be able to:

1. Explain innovation in the context of engineering.
2. Examine the engineering innovation process and the innovative engineering design.
3. Reflect on the engineering innovation process in solving technical problems.

Did you know that there is a global innovation ranking for each country? What do you think is the
rank of the Philippines for the past few years?

Innovation Engineering is characterized as a technique for taking care of innovation and business issues
for associations who need to innovate, adjust, as well as enter new markets utilizing aptitude in
emerging technologies (for example, information, AI, framework engineering, blockchain), innovation
plans of action, advancement culture, and high-performing systems.

The Innovation Engineering process is presented in a diagram by Sidhu (2019) as shown below. This
straightforward procedure can be applicable in an organizational setting. The graph below shows a
procedure stream for Innovation Engineering with more prominent detail and in a more extensive
setting. The stream outlines that compelling ventures start consistently with a story or account. This
story is commonly founded on perceptions of changes on the planet. Whenever an innovation endeavor
does not begin with a narrative, it is barely characterized and has a tendency to go off target.

Innovative engineering design methods apply to new procedures, frameworks, and administrations, just
as to new products. Engineering design is a social procedure that starts with an opportunity or issue that
is settled over an inquiry-driven divergent procedure (Ozgur, 2004) that creates information about
customers, partners, clients, needs, determinations, appraisals, and current innovation that is utilized to
contextualize the imaginative procedures for idea age (Ulrich and Eppinger, 2004). Proponents contend
that bunch elements is the way to development and thus advocate techniques, for example, synectics
("the uniting of diversity"), mind planning, and conceptualizing.

Technology-Adoption Curves
The adoption of technologies follows an S-shaped curve. The subsequent curve refers to the ascent of
another innovation that will replace the primary innovation in the market. The innovation reception S-
curve as shown below starts with a creation. In the early portion of the curve when the innovation is
new and immature, the market is small. It is constrained to a few early adopters and little specialty
markets. As an innovation develops and arrives at the standard, organizations enter a period of quick
development. They center around rivalry with different organizations, improve their items to meet
advancing client needs, and accelerate their pace of overall industry. At the market top, there is
frequently unite for a piece of the pie and economies of scale. At the point when a market saturates,
organizations search for other development openings (Stefik and Stefick, 2006).

The Technology-Adoption Curves

As innovation cycles go on and on, innovations develop and leave more space at the base. No
organization or nation can hope to overwhelm a specific innovation uncertainly. Advancements either
move away to different areas or are displaced by the next big thing. What makes another open door at
the base is the interest in the following round of developments. (Stefik and Stefick, 2006).

In summary,
• Innovation Engineering is characterized as a technique for taking care of innovation and
business issues for associations who need to innovate, adjust, as well as enter new markets
utilizing aptitude in emerging technologies.
• Innovative engineering design methods apply to new procedures, frameworks, and
administrations, just as to new products. Engineering design is a social procedure that starts
with an opportunity (an issue) that is settled over an inquiry-driven divergent procedure.
• Technology-adoption curves uncover the business conditions that shape how an organization
sees its requirement for innovation.

Independent Work Assignment:

1. What is the Global Innovation Index (GII)?
2. What are the contributing factors of GII?
3. What is the Philippine’s rank in GII for the past 5 years?
