 Introduction

Suffering is a universal phenomenon that is difficult for us to avoid. Whenever and wherever we
are, it feels like the reality of suffering, both physically and spiritually, is very close to our lives.
Therefore, the extent to which we perceive and interpret the reality of suffering that approaches
our lives. Does it become a frightening specter or should be avoided because it is very painful?
Or do we have to cultivate courage and perseverance to climb it because we believe behind every
beautiful pearl?

And at this meeting we will see suffering as the door to freedom. The suffering that had started
from God's chosen nation, the Israelites, reached its climax in Christ Himself and that suffering
did not stop but continues to this day. We will look at the suffering described in 1 Corinthians
chapter 10 as a guide to our hearts and thoughts about suffering.

 Text 1 Cor, 10:1-33

Israel as a warning

10:1 I want you to know, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and that they all
crossed the sea. 10:2 In order to be followers of Moses they were all baptized into the cloud and
into the sea. 10:3 They all eat the same spiritual food 10:4 and they all drink the same spiritual
drink, because they drink from the spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock is Christ. 10:5
But even so God was not pleased with the greater part of them, because they were killed in the
wilderness. 10:6 All this has happened as an example for us to warn us, lest we desire evil things
as they have done, 10:7 and lest we become idolaters, as some of them did, as it is written, “So
the people sat down to eat and drink; then they got up and rejoiced.” 10:8 We must not commit
fornication, as some of them did, so that in one day twenty-three thousand people died. 10:9 And
let us not put the Lord to the test, as some of them did, so that they die by snakes. 10:10 And do
not grumble, as some of them did, so that they are destroyed by the angel of death. 10:11 All
these things have happened to them as examples and were written as a warning to us who live in
a time when the last days have arrived. 10:12 Therefore whoever thinks that he is standing, be
careful not to fall! 10:13 The trials that you experience are ordinary trials, which do not exceed
human strength. For God is faithful and therefore He will not allow you to be tempted beyond
your strength. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out, so that you can endure it.
10:14 Therefore, my beloved brethren, stay away from idolatry! 10:15 I speak to you as wise
men. Consider for yourself what I say! 10:16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give
thanks the fellowship with the blood of Christ? Isn't the bread that we break a fellowship with the
body of Christ? 10:17 Since the bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all share in
the one bread. 10:18 Consider the nation of Israel according to the flesh: do not those who eat
what is offered share in the service of the altar? 10:19 What do I mean by these words? That the
offering of idols is a thing? Or that idols are something? 10:20 No! What I mean is, that their
offerings are offerings to demons, not to God. And I don't want you to have fellowship with evil
spirits. 10:21 You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord nor from the cup of evil spirits. You
cannot partake of the Lord's Supper and neither can you partake of the supper of the evil spirits.
10:22 Or will we arouse God's jealousy? Are we stronger than Him? 10:23 "Anything is
allowed." True, but not everything is useful. "Anything is allowed." True, but not everything
builds. 10:24 Let no one seek his own gain, but each one should seek the benefit of another.
10:25 You may eat anything that is sold in the meat market, without being examined for
objections of conscience. 10:26 For: "The earth and everything in it belongs to the Lord." 10:27
If someone who doesn't believe you is invited to eat a meal, and you accept the invitation, eat
whatever is served to you, without examining it for objections of conscience. 10:28 But if
anyone says to you, "This is an offering to idols!" do not eat it, because of him who said this to
you and because of the objections of conscience. 10:29 What I mean by objections is not the
objections of your own conscience, but the objections of the conscience of others. Someone
might say: "Why should my freedom be determined by the objections of other people's
conscience? 10:30 If I give thanks for what I eat, why do people speak evil of me because of the
food for which I give thanks?" 10:31 I answered, If you eat or drink, or do anything else, do it all
for the glory of God. 10:32 You must not cause doubt in the hearts of people, whether Jews or
Greeks, or the church of God. 10:33 Just as I also try to please everyone in everything, not for
my own sake, but for the sake of the people, so that they may be saved.

 Interpretation of the text 1 Cor,10:1-33

1 Cor, 10:1-2; gives an expression of faith that God always accompanies every activity of the
nation of Israel. God's existence is marked by the cloud that protects and guides them.

1 Cor,10:3-4; spiritual food and drink in the sense of being given “strength” from heaven. Paul is
here reminding people of the "true bread and drink from heaven", through the Eucharist.

1cor,10:5; give the message that Allah will reject those who are arrogant and rash. So let those
who "know" guard themselves.

1 Cor,10:6-7; explained that the previous verses were a warning that Allah gave in order to
finally reach joy.

1 Cor,10:8-10; Allah gives prohibitions so that they are not violated but live according to His will

1cor, 10:11-13, contains conditions for us to act in vigilance so that we do not fall into error
before God because God is faithful
1cor, 10:14-15, in these verses God gives us freedom to act, but God also expects us to act
according to wisdom

1 Cor, 10:16-17, the purpose of our life is only 1, even though there are many things that we live,
but all of them will end in the unity and inclusion of that unity.

1cor, 10:18-20, gives a comparison that worldly desires will continue to lead us to forget Allah,
and Allah really does not want us to forget Allah

1 Cor, 10:21-22, the choice we have is only 1 time, and our choice is only Allah.

1 Cor, 10:23-24, everything we do should always be based on wisdom, not based on mere
pleasure.

1 Cor 10:25-26 Whatever is on earth is good, for it is all from God, and we should not hesitate to
use it.

1cor, 10:27-29, conscience is in every human being that should be used as a guide, conscience
becomes a separate judge for ourselves

1cor, 10: 30-33, at the end of what happens we should always involve thanksgiving and gratitude
for what we get. The gratitude and gratitude that we sing is not self-interest but how much
humility we are.

 Message and application

Suffering, whatever its form, always interferes with the comfort of our lives. Of course this is a
phenomenon that is very painful, sad and shackles our lives. They feel life has become empty,
meaningless! Not even a few people in this situation become desperate and commit suicide.
Therefore, no one expects suffering. Suffering is an experience that cannot be separated from the
reality of human life. everyone will find this experience. The suffering we experience is caused
by the struggle of the soul in an effort to organize our spiritual life. Suffering is a universal
phenomenon for human life. He approached every human being regardless of the background of
life. suffering never cares about one's life and condition and position.

The presence of suffering in life is a long process. So that we feel ready to face it all. However,
sometimes the presence of suffering without "notice" in advance. He came suddenly! It could be
that we are not ready to face it. Maybe at that time we were still fragile and unstable. Perhaps
suffering comes suddenly at a time when we are obsessed with the joy we have achieved and
created.

Saint Paul in his letter to the Corinthians we can follow the example of Saint Paul to live our
lives today. The example we can take is to have a strong desire to repent and start a new life as
Christ's property, have a sense of responsibility, have a strong stand, be patient. These examples
are not something that is hard for us to follow because all the examples Paul gave are still within
the level of our capabilities as humans. it is also necessary to know that the sufferings we
experience will end with a freedom and will end because God gave sufferers, God also pays
attention to the abilities we have as well.
