DATE: 5TH MAY, 2020 SUMMARY OF CHAPTER 5 “WHY SHOULD BE ANYONE LED BY YOU” This chapter is written by Robert Goffee and Gareth Jones. The aim of this chapter is to define those qualities which makes leader to lead anyone. All the leaders are not capable enough to lead everyone there are some distinct qualities which makes them to lead anyone. In the start of this chapter authors discussed about those four qualities. Those qualities are: leaders show their weaknesses, leaders rely on intuitions and wait for best time to take actions, leaders manage people with empathy, and they reveal their differences. These are the qualities which are essential for leadership to lead anyone, to stay alive in hearts of people and to inspire them. Revealing weaknesses: it doesn’t mean leaders are in trouble and need help. It means leaders who show their weaknesses are good enough to create environment of trust. Leaders seen authentic when he/she talk about their weaknesses it basically help them to create collaborative environment. Employees/followers see their leader as genuine person and without any hesitation share their opinions and knowledge with leaders. Main purpose to reveal weakness is to show followers/employees as their leader is human being as well he /she can also do mistakes and have some flaws, everyone is not perfect so basically it helps to create environment of trust on leader due to his/her authenticity. Here the important thing is leaders must know which of the weakness they should reveal and which not. Picking right weakness to show is mastery art of leaders, which actually show strength but wrap in envelop of weakness. Become a sensor: inspirational leaders are good in sensing. They interpret the soft data capture future signal and then take actions according to that. Although sense a situation before it occur is not an easy for everyone. Leaders who rely on their intuitions are good in sensing the situation. Here is problem as well sensing always do no bring desired outcomes so sensing a situation also need interpretation of information that is necessary for leaders to do. Leaders need to consult or discuss with his/her team before taking action. Practice tough empathy: leaders must concern about their teams, tough empathy is giving people what they need not what they want. So here leader’s role is important to identify what followers actually need. Leaders must have to engage with followers communicate with them and understand their opinions. It helps leader to create trust between follower and leaders which ultimately helps to identify what followers actually need. So when followers see their leader have concern about their (followers) values they ultimately committed towards organization so tough empathy is essential for the success of any business. Dare to be different: inspirational leaders have some uniqueness. Those uniqueness separate them from other that is the important trait of leaders to inspire others. It is important to communicate those differences with others to do so leaders must capable enough to identify first what makes them really different. Leaders have to use those differences for productive purpose not just to stay in top position. Leaders must have to communicate with followers, keep one thing in mind those differences should not make followers apart from leaders. Over differentiation can be atrocious for leaders, followers and businesses leaders must have to maintain a balance. These four qualities are essential for executives to act like leader not like boss. These qualities are not used by own they must be in part of executive personality. These qualities help leaders to lead anyone. CRITICISM I admire all these qualities that authors demonstrated in this chapter. I argue with three things. Here in this chapter the first quality is leaders should reveal their weaknesses. Although it is necessary to be transparent to gain trust of followers but in my opinion showing weaknesses may brought leaders in trouble some situations as well. Either they choose best to reveal but they could not read the minds of followers as what they perceive. Second is leaders follow intuitions, here in this chapter it is demonstrated that leader interpret soft data then take actions. But in my opinion to go with gut feeling leaders must have previous experience in order to back up their decision or tackle upcoming problems. If leader follow intuition then it is necessary to involve followers with him/herself and communicate with them in order to retain them if future bring trouble. Third is dare to be different although unique qualities makes a leader different but personality differences can also construct a wall between leader and followers. QUESTIONS 1- Should leaders expose those flaws/weaknesses which seems them incompetent but beneficial for prosperity of business? 2- What is more passable either leader communicate their differences by their own or followers observe by own?
