Plan: The Tortoise and the Hare
Standards:
5.3.3. Explain how characters evolve over the course of a work
5.3.7. Discuss similarities and differences between characters and personal or real
world experiences
Objectives:
Students will use character traits to describe how each character changes
throughout the story
Students will use character traits to compare/contrast characters with themselves
Students will identify and apply 'Tortoise‐like' behaviors throughout the classroom
Materials:
Tortoise and Hare copies White board
Tortoise Awards
Projector
Anticipatory Set:
‐Ask the class if they have ever felt overconfident in their ability to do a task. What
happens when a student feels overconfident in their ability to complete an
assignment or understand material? Discuss the consequences of rushing, and not
fully applying oneself to work.
Procedure:
‐Read the Tortoise and the Hare as a class
‐Discuss the plot events and situations that contributed to the moral/ending
‐Students identify character traits and how they evolved throughout the story in
pairs using T‐Charts
‐Class reviews partner answers and makes a class T‐Chart of character traits at the
beginning and end of story
‐Students write a paragraph comparing/contrasting themselves to either the Hare
or the Tortoise
‐Students identify and exhibit hard‐working, Tortoise‐like, behaviors in themselves
and classmates through use of 'Tortoise Awards' over an extended period of time
Assessment:
‐Student compare/contrast paragraphs using character traits
‐Observation of Tortoise Awards implementation
