Subject: ELA Comprehension

Common Core Standard(s):

● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.1
Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly
and when drawing inferences from the text.
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.3
Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or
drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).
● CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.2
Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text,
including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how
the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.

Objective(s): At the end of this lesson my students will be able to accurately complete a character map
about Stargirl. The students will understand how different characters in the story shape Stargirl into
who she is. Students will be able to tell what Stargirls character traits are after reading chapters 1-3
and able to use textual evidence to show their thoughts and prove them.

Resources/Materials List:
● Stargirl book
● Character map worksheet (see appendix A)
● Pencils/pens
● Projector

Procedure: (1 hour duration)

1. Students will read chapter 9-13 as a class or individually (some for homework).
2. We will discuss character traits.
a. What is a character trait?
b. What traits do you have as a person?
c. A character trait is a moral, value, or belief that a character has.
d. Every character has different character traits.
3. Pass out worksheet (Appendix A).
4. Have students fill out the worksheet.
a. Draw a picture of Stargirl.
b. Fill out her personality traits - with evidence from the text.
c. How is Stargirl different from most 10th graders - with evidence from the text
comparing Stargirl with the other characters in the text.
d. List of things Stargirl likes - with evidence from the text
5. Will have students share their ideas with the class after they are finished.
6. Write a list on the board or projector of the character traits that students discussed.
a. Add some quotes that go along with these character traits.
7. Keep this list for further exploration and to look back on while reading the rest of the novel.
8. Discuss that it is okay to be different just like Stargirl is.
Plans for differentiation:
● High Performers- High performers can read chapters 1-3 silently in the reading corner if they
wish to do so. They may want to go at a faster pace than the rest of the class so it would be
beneficial to them to read silently. They can also do a character map on another character in the
book as well as one on Stargirl. They may finish the Stargirl worksheet early so they can do the
same one with another character and explore them. They can then share with the class what they
learned about the other character they chose to explore the character traits of.
● Low Performers- Low performers can work in groups or with the teacher to fill out this
worksheet. Students can have guidance when finding quotes in the text that relate to the
character traits that they chose for Stargirl.

Assessment: To know that students understood the lesson I will check their worksheets and see if they
had understanding of the text and what we learned. If the answers are correct and have detailed
explanations of why they think that is the answers, then I will know they mastered the topic. The
evidence they chose to explain their answers should also make sense in the context of their answer.
Students will also be assessed using the rubric in Appendix B.

What’s next? Students can hang up their worksheets around the classroom for reference of the
character traits that Stargirl has and how she is “different” than her other classmates. For the next lesson
students could create a character map with all of the characters and their traits to compare them.
